oilgaslbMemberGood morning everyone – I've got a solid 3 hours starting right now…then I'll shower, get ready, and any in between time I'll study before I leave for the airport. Then hopefully I'll get another 3 hours in during the early-mid afternoon. I guess I should grocery shop for the first time in 2 weeks at some point…oh the passions we give up for the sake of time and stress.

NJPRUMember@CPAMommy – what exactly was the problem stating? I want to try to put some context behind their explanation.. or is that all of it?
@oilgas – good luck!

AnonymousInactiveThe problem asked if it's sold at a premium is the carrying value more or less than the cash paid.

oilgaslbMember@mommy…again take this with a grain of salt but I think the entry would be:
DR: Investment
DR: Premium
CR: Cash
Therefore the carrying amount + premium = cash paid, meaning both the carrying amount and premium are less than the cash paid.
Does that make sense?

NJPRUMemberHere's an example of cash paid being MORE than the carrying amount at a DISCOUNT.
BUT, I think this goes against wiley's explanation. so now I'm confused.
On July 1, Year 2, York Co. purchased as a long-term investment $1 million of Park, Inc.’s 8% bonds for $946,000, including accrued interest of $40,000. The bonds were purchased to yield 10% interest. The bonds mature on January 1, Year 8, and pay interest annually on January 1. York uses the effective interest method of amortization. In its December 31, Year 2, balance sheet, what amount should York report as investment in bonds?
The bond investment’s original balance was $906,000 ($946,000 price – $40,000 accrued interest) because the carrying amount does not include accrued interest paid. Under the effective interest method, interest income equals the yield or effective interest rate times the carrying amount of the bonds at the beginning of the interest period. The amortization of premium or discount is the difference between this interest income and the periodic cash payments. For Year 2, interest income is $45,300 [$906,000 × 10% × (6 ÷ 12)], and the actual interest is $40,000 [$1,000,000 × 8% × (6 ÷ 12)]. Hence, the carrying amount at year-end is $911,300 [$906,000 + ($45,300 – $40,000)].
In essence, you paid 946,000 for the bond, however, the bond's carrying amount was 906,000 (946-40 accrued interest). The discount would be 94,000 (1million – 906k).

AnonymousInactiveThat JE was in their solution. It didn't make sense to me either because I would have done the JE like oilgas. Thanks NJPRU–that helps!

AnonymousInactiveEnded my quiz on bonds with a 71%. Some were dumb mistakes, but most were warrant issues. I have to study those more. Done studying for the day. Going to pick up the munchkins for family day. I hope you all have a GREAT day of studying. See you sometime this week.

AnonymousInactiveNJPRU … Don't give up. Sometimes it helps to just take a break. I couldn't understand anything last night about one section in F3. Went to sleep instead and was able to finish it easily this morning.

samdiegoCPAMemberOh myyy… had dreams about the exam last night. You took the exam from a powerpoint presentation and up to 3 times in the same quarter. I was in the 70's for my first two tries, then noticed they messed up and I got a 82 on my third try but they accidentally put it as an 8, so I took it twice more! Also, one of the questions was asking about the people who ran NASBA. Answers were “white, old men”, “over the age of 57” and I forgot the rest.
I'm clearly losing my mind!
Today it's going to be in the high 80's in San Diego here by the beach and I get to sit on my couch all day and study terrible material. Hoping to re-write chapters 3 & 4 today so I'll have 5-8 to do this week before I go to Mexico next weekend.

CPAfitParticipant@samdiego lol at your dream. I usually have dreams that my exam is next day and i'm getting late so I rush out of bed just to realize it was just a pee pee call 😉
btw Becker is under going maintenance and my software is acting weird. I guess that's a sign from nature to shut the books for now and hit the bed. Will finish F9 tom morning, only 3 slides left. Then on to F10 and after that hopefully by the weekend i'll begin my review and MCQs. Let's do this. Happy study everyone 🙂

AmayMemberYou guys, I feel like I have wasted this entire week due to getting sick in the middle of the week and then having a hard time picking up the books again. Today I woke up early, but with running some errands, visiting my sick mother-in-law with my husband, and just pure procrastination the rest of the time, I have accomplished nothing! I have my dad's bday celebration tonight that I have to get ready for in a couple of hours. I need to at least get some studying in today! I don't want to feel like I am cramming for this exam again. I gotta push through it every day, even if I feel sick! I am so mad at myself.

REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! 😀*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently 🙂

teeteenounoucheMemberAmay, don't beat yourself up…since you have a lot going on today, can you study a little after the party or try and leave a little earlier than you would have to get an hour or 2 in before bed? If not, take a shot of rum to get that cold out of you before bed and plan your week for jam packed studying!

teeteenounoucheMemberNJPRU, keep pushing…not all topics will make sense. I am just writing notes in a way (lists) my mind will remember if I don't get what I'm reading…hopefully this will do the trick.
samdiegoCPA, Mexican vacay sounds like a wonderful dream to me, great motivation for you to get lots of studying in before hand…
