In order to take an early April exam, you should begin studying…now. 🙂

Hey guys – so, i've spent literally 3 days on EPS and I just don't understand it. When I read it in Becker and Gleim, I completely understand the concepts, but the more I work the problems, more concepts are getting added to the original concepts that aren't in the chapter. Also, I just don't think I'm grasping how to apply the concepts to the problems.

At this point, I can't waste any more time on it therefore, I'm thinking of just putting off EPS for a bit, and working a new chapter to clear my head and start anew with EPS so it's “new” when I review.

    Does anyone have an suggestions?

BEPS is very much straight forward, I think DEPS is the problem simply becuase you have to perform some tests to determine whether convertible bonds and prefered stocks are dilutive or antidilutive. If you have a specific problem or mcq concerning this topic, just copy and paste here and we will be happy to help you out.

Good morning everyone! Sorry for being MIA all weekend. I have a miserable cold, but was still able to get through most of working capital/fixed assets. Our A/C is out at work (for the 3rd day…major electrical problems in the building). They're bringing fans but it's already so hot in here. This means that since I'm sick, and it's hot in here, my manager is letting us go right on time tonight or even early, despite today and tomorrow being the busiest days of my month.

I'm going to finish F4 (working cap/f.a.) and a progress test today/tonight. Then my plan is to do F5 (leases/liabilities/bonds) Tuesday and Wednesday then keep moving. I need to catch up after getting behind. I can't lose motivation!

Hope everyone else was a little more productive this weekend!

@Stoleway – I think you're right. DEPS is my issue – here is one for finding the weighted average in DEPS:

At December 31, Year 1, Lex, Inc., had 600,000 shares of common stock outstanding. On April 1, Year 2, an additional 180,000 shares of common stock were issued for cash. Lex also had $5 million of 8% convertible bonds outstanding at December 31, Year 2, which are convertible into 150,000 shares of common stock. The bonds were dilutive in the Year 2 DEPS computation. No bonds were issued or converted into common stock during Year 2. What is the number of shares that should be used in computing DEPS for Year 2?

    Answer:

DEPS should be based on the weighted-average number of (1) shares of common stock outstanding and (2) the shares of common stock assumed to have been issued to reflect the conversion of the bonds. The weighted-average number of shares for Year 2 should therefore be 885,000, based on 750,000 shares outstanding for the entire year (600,000 beginning balance + 150,000 from the hypothetical conversion of bonds) and 180,000 additional shares issued on April 1.

I guess my issue with this is that I dont understand why the conversion of bonds would be added to the W/A porpotionment of the outstanding shares. I was under the impression that you W/A using the porportion treatment for the common shares and then add to it the converted bonds and preferred shares.

    @NJPRU

You are basically confusing yourself by inter-changing information. Once the Bond or prefered shares are Potential Common Stock and its been proven to be dilutive, it doesnt matter how you apportion it.

The key is knowing what your weighted average outstanding common shares and add the Prefered shares and bonds to your weighted average only if they are dilutive.

If none of them are dilutive, your BEPS will be the same as DEPS.

Thanks for your help. I think I just need a break from EPS. I've decided I'll revist it at a later time once I've stopped stressing about it – currently nothing is being retained.

    Thanks again.

This weekend (especially Sunday) was so unproductive as far as studying goes. Spent part of the day with family and part cleaning. However, one thing I've noted happens with me is after an intense week of studying, I get drained by Saturday night and zone out on Sundays. Weekends are supposed to be power weekend right? Apparantly I don't feel motivated enough on weekend to study. Any tips?

@RachelP – Congrats on your first pass. I am also waiting for that first pass! I hope it's FAR!
