I’ve been out of school for 12 years and started with Yeager which put me to sleep now I’m going with Roger who is about as exciting as accounting gets and I don’t want to spend money on any other review courses … did I mention I also tried gleim (fail). Has anyone else used rogers program with success who have been out of school for a while. Any suggestions? I also purchased Ninja notes but haven’t really got into them yet.

    Thanks,

    CPA hopeful.

I was out for 15 yrs, when i decided to go back. I used Becker and passed all 4 on the first try (as of last Friday). However, there were multiple times I had to pull my textbooks out to clarify certain issues.

I would propose that part of what you are lacking due to being out of school for 12 years is established study habits. It's harder to remember how to study and learn the longer you've been out of school. Yeager, Roger, and Gleim all have the information necessary to pass the exams – the key is to figure out how to obtain the information from them.

Also, it sounds like you have been having issues with the lectures. Have you tried reading the books instead? I'm one of those people who learns better from a book than a lecture, so for me just reading through the book and doing practice questions worked better than trying to listen to anyone's lectures. That being said, the books can tend towards putting one to sleep too. 😉 However, they're so much more efficient than the lectures that honestly, you could get a few cat-naps while reading and still know more sooner than someone watching lectures, IMHO. So, if you think you might learn well from reading, I would urge you to pick one of the review courses and start reading its book.

I have to agree with what Lilla is saying. No matter which program you go with, you still have to learn the same information. You have to find what works best for you, and lectures may or may not be it.

I personally forced myself to watch lectures through once (and at 1.5x speed). The lectures did help somewhat at first when I was trying to get the hang of the Wiley ‘textbooks', but I discovered I learned so much more just by reading the text myself and working MCQ like crazy. The Ninja notes are really helpful too so definitely use them.

I have been out of school for a long time. I use Becker.

I have to take my own notes, which is time consuming, but it helps me organize the info in a way that I can remember it.

For FAR, I spent many hours typing notes into Word. – Info organized by chapter.

That way, I can use large fonts, bold, underline, etc, to help certain pieces of info stand out.

It was extremely helpful. I'm a visual person so helps to see the info with more white space on the page than allowed in the textbook.

I still type notes for other sections, but not as thoroughly as I did for FAR – way too time consuming.

Now I write tons of notecards, and I type notes on certain topics based only on what I need to better understand. It helps to see it in a different format and/or larger fonts than in a printed book.

Sometimes, I create an outline of a chapter in Word and print it out.

Other times, I recreate a chart from the book, in larger type.

I create “cheat sheets” of a page of formulas, or several mneumonics.

Print notes and put it all in a binder, and you have a custom supplementary study aid.

    FAR - 86 - 2/27/14
    AUD - 75 - 5/29/14
    BEC - 80 - 8/31/14
    REG - 89 - 2/27/15
    Praise Jesus! I'm done!!
