Skipping Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting In FAR - Page 2

    Hello,

I will appear for the first time in FAR (also my first CPA exam) in February 2017. I wanted to know if I can skip Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting topics and still be in good shape to at least pass? The only other subtopic that I have avoided studying is Share based payments.
This will give me more revision time. I only get 2 hours a day to study, and so far I have only completed first read of the Wiley Study Guide.
Also, I haven’t really looked into new inclusions in the test syllabus since 2014, and have been studying from the 2014 study guide. Should I be worried?

    Thank you,

Very funny! You do know that's 20% of the exam. What about if you get a SIM from that subchapter? It happens, read the comments. Even you need to reschedule, you should. Its not a good risk to omit that material

If I can give one word of advice, it would be to focus on Govt & NFP.
It is by far the highest pay-off in terms of cost/benefit.
Worth a significant part of your exam and its relatively easy and short.

You will most likely not pass if you skip that part. The exam is heavily tested on those two even though they may not represent a huge portion of the study material. If you had to skip something, you'll be better skipping one of the others that are difficult.

Wow, quite awesome to see the community give such a united and decisive answer. NFP & Gov are small sections in relation to necessary study material and are hugely represented on the test. Just like everyone else, I think it would be unwise to not study them.

@Ryan- People didn't believe me at first, but that's really what I did lol. The one thing is, out of the sims I've been practicing on Gleim, there seem to be a decent amount of answers that were actually 0 so maybe I had a couple like that on my exam.

I scored stronger on all mcq topics except blaw and ethics which frustrates the hell out of me that I'd probably be done if I even had half a clue of what was going on for my sims.

@RE2PECT…I had some absurd SIMS as well. They took the minorest of topics and turned it into a huge SIM. I could have practiced every SIM on the market and it would not of helped one bit. Hoping for a miracle, otherwise see you in January.

@Ryan- The funny thing is that a few of them were on topics I was familiar with, but they were set up in such a way that I had no idea how to answer them. It's like they're intentionally trying to confuse you instead of testing your knowledge on the subject.

I've been practicing Gleim sims and I feel like they're as close to the exam as it gets. I might not get a similar sim, but at least I'm getting used to how to approach them and their AL is almost identical to the one on the exam.

It will definitely show up and will definitely be a significant portion of the test. Make sure you put in enough time and kill the MCQs and TBSs for Govt/NFP until you are comfortable. You will thank yourself later.

If you want you can just hand me your test fees and I will give you a FAR grade. If you skip that you are basically throwing that test money out the window.

This is the CPA exam, and your first section at that. If you take this thing lightly, you will not get through it. It takes sacrifice and dedication, unless you are some kind of genius and I would argue if you are that smart you are wasting your potential by being a CPA.

Gov't and NFP, especially Gov't, were probably my weakest and least studied areas. Still passed with an 88. You probably will get quite a few MCQs on both though. Definitely at least put some time into doing MCQs on them though.
