This was my first exam but I never thought I would score this low. I worked only with Wiley Book and did all the released questions also.I didn’t practice sims.. but uhhhhhhhhhh I am so embarrassed to even tell my parents

I think you need to prepare SIMS this time. SIMs are difficult but it integrates different topics in each chapter. MCQ normally covers only one or two topic, but SIMs will ask you questions that you may not be aware of.

Also, you might consider take notes for the text and also MCQs. This may help you remember the key points.

    JBJ,

For some reason I thought each packet was 20-25 or so. I do remember reading them towards the very end. Actually, when I was going in for FAR…. I did poorer on the FAR packer than on AUD… which I haven't at that time picked up for 1+ years. It was demoralizing, but thankfully it turned out alright.

    AUD - 75*, 88 done 5/14! (*exp)
    BEC - 74 , 77
    REG - 65 , 76 (10 point combooo!!)
    FAR - 69 , 75

You are not a dummy! I studied for 3 months for FAR and ended up with a 54. I realized when I moved onto my next exam I was not focusing on the information when I studied. I should have done a lot more MCs. My next exam I fail with a 64, which I expected. I ran out of study time, but feel with each exam I am gaining focus and learning what works for me. I think the Ninja material is worth every penny!

Let’s move on and crush the next one!!

    AUD 83 2/16
    BEC 76 9/16
    FAR 77 7/15
    REG 72 6/16, retake 85 12/16
    Licensed CPA 1/19/17!

    AUD (10/14) 62 (2/16) 83
    BEC
    FAR (8/14)71 (1/24/15)77
    REG (5/14) 69

    SweetCPA,

If you were scoring in the 80s on the MC cumulative exams then your real score does not reflect your knowledge of the material. I think you got trigger happy and started answering questions too fast, and not paying attention to the tricky ones. Have you taken becker’s final?

When you are studying make sure you are understanding all the answer explanations, why the correct answer is correct and why the wrong answers are wrong. There are great explanations there that help the info sink in. It is time consuming but well worth it. Also, I would definitely spend some time practicing some sims. I know a lot of people say not to bother because you never know what you will get but I think it is key. Also make sure you know your journal entries. Set all the problems up in t-accounts and think how it would be set up in a journal entry even if not needed so you understand it. I made copies of the major examples of different topics and added it to my ninja notes to study in addition to working questions. I listened to ninja audio every day in my car. Little things like that help to get extra points.

Well SweetCPA, it was also my first time taking FAR and I didn't score as low as you but I also didn't score much higher than you. I was in complete shock as well. I studied for 2 1/2 months, reviewed for 2 weeks, did the AICPA released questions, used Gleim, and did SIMS. I felt pretty good on the MCQs on the exam, they actually seemed too easy for me. Once I got to the SIMS, I pretty much froze. My mind went blank. I answered everything, but I know for a fact I didn't do well on the SIMS but was hoping for at least partial credit. I have the Wiley Testbank through NINJA but did not use it. I believe I will incorporate it this go round to have different questions.

I am not sure where I went wrong either, but I have already printed off the Re-take application to retake at the beginning of July.

I got all my crying out of the way and tomorrow is a new day and the day I will start back studying. I am hoping to gain a study partner this go round too. Maybe that will help talking out problems with.

We can do this! I am determined to master FAR now.

    FAR - 46, 79 (7/8/14)
    AUD - 56, 59, 2/23/15 3rd times a charm!
    BEC - 69, 74 Really??
REG - April, I hope. Fingers crossed!

Lots of great advice here so I won't add too much. It sounds like a part of it could be test day nerves. Also, you said you guessed on the non research Sims…sounds to me like that's a big issue right there. With 40% of your exam coming from 7 sims and you guessed on 6 of them that's a leak. Fix your sim leak. Usually weakness in the Sims mean you don't truly understand the material and have more memorized then comprehended the topics. My advice: get a brand new set of MCQs and use 300 of the questions or so spread across all topics to figure out where your true strengths and weaknesses are. From there review and really try to understand not just the right answer, but what makes it the right answer. You aren't stupid, you just misfired. Happens all the time. Now instead of more self pity, go fix your leaks and cruah it next go around.

Did you use up to date Wiley material? Also, you need to INVEST in a quality review system. If youre not willing to invest in it, then I am not sure how committed you are. You need an online test bank. Those AICPA review questions are so few and barely helpful, you need to do thousands of questions which have tricky ways of asking the same thing, and several SIMS to make sure you know the material. Also, you need to take practice exams to simulate the exam. 2 months is too long for FAR…I suggest studying 6 weeks MAX

@SweetCPA, don't be embarrassed. This entire exam is brutal, and everything about it is a learning process.

Now you learned that Wiley books don't work for you. Time to try something new.

Take a look at my signature. I spent 2013 studying for tests that I completely bombed. I felt like a failure, and a complete moron.

I had no idea what it would take to pass FAR. I did try the Wiley books, but I could tell right away that I wasn't retaining the information, so I moved on. That's when I looked for a course.

It was a learning process, but I finally figured out what exactly what worked for me, and I passed FAR. Most people here will say that studying 4.5 months is too long, but it did work for me.

I don't know what will work for you. I just wanted to say that if you feel like you need more time, then that's what is best for you, and you should do that. Do not feel bad if it takes another 2 months, or more.

The other thing that helped me tremendously, that I can't fit in my signature anymore, is that I now get up at 5am to study before work. It has helped me retain information much more than when I studied at night (up until October of last year, I refused to get up early; I hated it. It was a big mistake, for me).

Also, I bought laminated scratch paper to force myself to write out calculations on the paper that is given in the exam; versus doing calculations on excel like I prefer, but is unavailable during the exam.

This discussion helped me find the one to buy: https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/scratch-paper-erasable-laminate

I would up realizing that that silly scratch paper helped out a lot with journal entry's and T-Accounts, too.

FYI, for my Audit retest, what I'm doing is all of Roger's questions first, then WTB (since both of them are already paid for); I'm going to do the Wiley questions just once because I do have a tendency to memorize the questions. Then I'm going to buy the Ninja test bank.

In all 3 I'm going to do all MCQ and TBS, at least once. The only questions I'm planning on doing more than once are my problem areas, which the Ninja system will tell me to work on.

    Good luck!!!
