Surgent CPA Review Ratings? Anyone on here using Surgent? I had a coworker who was using Bisk (now obsolete, Ninja acquired them) and she got like 50% off after showing them a copy of her receipt for the Bisk membership plus copies of her failed exam scores. She’s now on a passing streak. If anyone is using Surgent, could you bulletpoint the strengths/weaknesses of this program? They claim to be the panacea for CPA exam blues… Just curious if anyone is using them and succeeding. The coworker never really elaborated on what she liked about Surgent. But, I think she knew that the other vendors had their respective flaws and she liked that Surgent gave it to her for cheap. Since I had a less-than-favorable experience with Roger, I could go the same route. IF I knew that Surgent was going to help me pass.

@crazyleon If you have the right study plan, you can definitely make plenty of time for both Roger and Ninja; I have. I work full-time as an audit staffer, then come home and study daily. I am currently studying for FAR and am scheduled to sit on December 2nd. I have found the following routine works great for me:
    1. Read Roger's textbook for the entire Section.
    2. Watch Roger's lectures – except for the class questions and TBS explanations.
    3. Watch Bisk (Bob's) lectures for corresponding section from Ninja Plus – I went through and created a spreadsheet matching Bob's lectures to Roger's lectures.
    4. Complete Roger's Class Questions and watch corresponding videos.
After completing the entire textbook in this fashion, I will focus solely on MCQs and SIMS. First, I will complete all of Roger's MCQs and SIMS. Then I will complete all of Ninja's MCQs and SIMS. I will have 2 1/2 weeks of problems only. I followed Roger's 6-month study plan (which schedules 7 weeks to complete their course for FAR) and added 2 weeks to then end of that for Review with Ninja. That is 9 weeks for FAR and I am feeling more confident each day since I have perfected this study plan for myself. I would be happy to share my spreadsheet if you're interested. Just keep at it; if you study, you will pass!

@JA – at this point, I'm not looking to do much more with Roger. I burned thru FAR and AUD, all the questions, already. I didn't use him for BEC because his lectures, the few I watched, left me more confused than before I watched them. Effectively, Roger helped me fail three times. Money down the toilet. I'm glad you have a program that is working for you. That's all that counts. Your procedure would not work for me, or probably anyone else. But thanks for sharing it. What works for Person A almost never works for Person B…yet another quandary of the CPA journey.

At this point, I just need to work practice problems. Which, I am currently too burned out to do. In another couple months I'll be ready again. I have to completely and totally flush out the garbage in my system regarding the CPA exams and start over with Ninja. I *may* use Roger for REG, as that's the one that I have not yet done and who knows? Maybe he'll help me pass REG.
I don't know why people supplement their primary review course with other materials. You pay enough money for the review course. It should be able to take you the whole nine yards.

If I hear that “If you study, you will pass” line one more time, I am gonna punch out some sheetrock. Easier said than accomplished. Not impossible, but for the vast majority of us, very difficult. If you study THE CORRECT WAY and the gods smile on you on exam day, and no extraneous crap hinders your performance, then you will pass.

@crazyleon I “supplement” simply because I sometimes need a second way of explaining something to clarify a concept. It's been helpful. But mostly because I spent a ton of money on Wiley and I hate to let it go to waste, even though my track record speaks for itself on how well it worked for me. That's one of the reasons I purchased Ninja – the price was right. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on another review program but clearly needed something that would work.

I also like having two test banks because it helps me ensure that I'm understanding the materials and not merely memorizing questions. I feel like Ninja's is closer to actual exam questions so I use it more than anything, and I like seeing the time I'm putting in pay off on scores.

@Jennifer that's nice that it's working for you….although, you're still in progress. I hope what you're doing is going to take you the whole nine yards.

But as I say, a good review course should ideally take us from the starting line to the finish line. Especially given the amount of money paid. Ohhhhh wellllll.

A good course *should* be enough, but often that isnt the case unfortunately. So if youve already bought a course your stuck.

I agree a good review course *should* take you the whole way. And I honestly believe that for most people any of the courses could get you to the finish line. The key is following the method the program prescribes, and not cutting corners. I see so many people set test dates and refuse to push them back even though as they work through their review course they aren't really learning or internalizing the material. Also skipping a review period which helps to put it all together, can contribute to “review course” failure. I think it's on the test taker to follow the course and make sure they are “getting it” before moving on. I think our own weaknesses cause review courses to fail individual test takers, not specific review courses.
With that being said Becker live classes overwhelmed me and I didn't follow the method because it was just to much, their time schedule was to fast for the amount of material they are attempting to cover. It's not Becker's fault, it could have worked if I followed it and made sure I understood everything before moving on. It wasn't the review courses fault I failed but rather mine. I like surgent better because it's more concise and so far has gotten me where I needed to be. We will see if that's true for far and Bec next month. I will say, nothing surprised me on Far everything was covered by surgent.

A perfect review course has yet to be invented. Other than maybe Ninja? I don't know a lot about Becker. It's been around for ages but plenty of people whine about it.
For the price you pay – they're the highest I think – I'd think there wouldn't be so many complaints. It sounds like Surgent would've been a better one for me than Roger was.
    But, I'm not looking back.

@futureCPA Surgent recently updated their software and its closer to the exam format. I passed FAR,BEC and AUD using Surgent alone. I got a 74 on REG with Surgent, switched to Becker only to get a 73. Went back to Surgent and awaiting (hopefully ) my last result. Good Luck!

@FutureCPA, I passed AUD, FAR, and REG on my first attempts using Surgent only. I am waiting on my BEC score and hopefully it is another pass. I am not sure about their practice exams because I only did review sessions along with all of the SIMs. But some of my MCQs on FAR and AUD were very similar to the MCQs I completed in Surgent.

    Never give up!

Surgent sounds like a remake of cpaexcel. I like the adaptive concept but I just don't have $2000 or more bucks for a review course, or even $500 bucks for a part. I understand that it doesn't expire and you can get a payment plan but money is tight so I think I'll stick with Ninja. Like others have said, any course is designed to help you pass, if you use it. But hey, good luck guys. I hope it pay off for you.
