Need help deciding whether or not to get Roger for REG

    Hi everyone,

I failed REG twice with scores of a 60 and 61. Unfortunately, I felt I knew the material much better the second time around. I obviously need big help with a deeper understanding, mostly in tax and with SIMS. (I worked in audit and now for a large bank on the private sector so I have zero tax experience.) I feel pretty good about the business law stuff, this would mainly be to get a stronger base in tax.

I used Becker combined with Wiley the first two times. I have NINJA notes this time around too. I am deciding whether or not to purchase the UWorld Roger CPA Review course for REG, or stick with Becker and read the text over and over. (I did not do this as much as I should have and doing MC’s without a strong base didn’t help me.) Do you think it will bring me to a 75? What is everyone’s experience with Roger lectures and deeper knowledge with tax?

I agree it's steep. Although I already have Becker so I could save $200 with their Fresh Start Discount. I just took FAR Monday and am hoping this will be my last test, and I just want to be done already. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get it done. Just not sure if reading Becker multiple times will be enough this time.

You already have Becker for REG? This is your first time taking REG?

It is my third time taking REG. I used Becker and supplemented a little with Wiley questions the first two times. Thought I knew it well enough, but got destroyed on SIMS and just don't seem to know tax well enough at all. Looking for something that can help with understanding tax.

WanttoBeDone, Do you rely on reading to learn information? or do you like having concepts explained to you?

I used Roger's course for REG a couple months ago, and really liked it. The problem was with me… I didn't manage my time well and did not complete all the homework, and still scored a 68. I really rely on lectures, so for me, it was great. Really memorable and well organized.

In your case, if it's simulations you want to really work on, Wiley/becker are a really good option. Roger's course uses Wiley for homework, but there are additional homework question in the book he wrote (those ones are explained extensively during the lectures and helped me learn how to better approach breaking down the question during exam time).

Like Jeff said, it's spendy, but sometimes it really helps to have a fresh start. There are discounts if you are switching from Becker or a member of your state CPA society.

Hope that helps! Watch a demo, and remember to do all the homework problems 2-3 times, reading why the answer is wrong AND right.

    Good luck

@ ceepa, Thanks!! I don't really rely on reading, but I find that these tests how so many minute details, and reading helps me to grasp the full picture. I think I can get the details down with the percentages and deductions, but I am lacking on the flow and overall big picture of all the difference tax statements, since I have no experience in this field and I've never done a tax return! I think for some of the more complex concepts within tax, I definitely do better reading the book over multiple times. I will definitely focus on more of the Wiley and Becker SIMS this time around.

So far, I am leaner towards sticking with Becker again. It seemed to be good enough for the other parts. Maybe I just didn't utilize it for my effectiveness the last try.
