Lack of motivation to study & Roger’s review material

I have taken audit twice and failed both times. I know my problem is that studying seems like a complete waste of my day. I wasn’t one that had to study much during school. Well now that I have to study, I have zero study habits. We all know you can’t cram the night before any section of the CPA exam. So, how do you find the motivation/drive to study? I really want to get the test behind me, but I just can seem to make myself study. Also, has anyone had success with UWorld Roger CPA Review’s review material?

I just pound coffee TBH… I just finished studying for Audit and took the test. It was my first test and I'm praying I don't have to open the book ever again.

I am on the same boat. Lacking motivation or when I study my mind is somewhere else and the whole study is ineffective. But when I do focus it is the best feeling. Guess ask yourself why you are doing this. I know a lot of people say that but you will be the only one that knows best. For me its because of financial purposes, my parents have been living with my grandma and one uncle for all their lives and this is because 1. my parents don't make enough to pay for all the bills and 2. my mom has to take care of my grandma. But things are turning sour my uncle and my mom always argue several times a week. So I keep reminding myself passing the exam will open many doors and good pay and I can finally buy them their own home in the near future. Apologize for this long post but I do hope you find your motivation and remember “FEAR” should be a big one, everyone is afraid of failure, that alone should drive you to success! The faster you are done the earlier you are free. Who would not want to spend their day doing something else than studying? I think it is important to have a balance otherwise all the CPA candidates would literally go insane!

    Ask yourself 2 questions

    1) Why you wanna be a CPA
    2) What would you do after you obtain your CPA license.

If you are not sure about the answer of either one of the above, you will know why you are lack of motivation.

    REG - 80 (02/13/2015) Roger + Ninja Flash Card + Ninja MCQ + Becker's Note

I like how Roger says -you know that junk drawer in your kitchen that you never clean out, well, you will clean that out before you finish the review material because you would rather do ANYTHING than study… No one wants to do this exam..

I like to just chugg straight espresso shots until i reach a euphoric out of body state that gives me the motivation needed.

Jeff has a video somewhere on this site that talks about wanting to play Madden every night (for me, it's Forza 6) instead of study. You really have to want to be a CPA, which is the reason I'm 10 years into my career and still don't have it. I played a lot of music and did other things after college (since I had a job and money) and worked at jobs where even I did get my license, it wasn't going to change much.
Now that I'm invested into a firm with a partner, I gotta get mine so we can be “an” actual CPA firm and not just under their name.
So, it really is about motivation. If I never wanted to work for myself, I'd have a hard time being convinced I really really wanted it.

I was in the same boat. I never really had to study until grad school – I feel like I slept-walked through both high school and undergrad. I waited 8 years after graduating from undergrad and 2 years after grad school before I started studying, because I wasn't motivated to. You have to ask yourself why, as others have said. I also signed up for what I thought would be the easiest exam first so that I could get one done without suffering too much. It worked – I was much more focus after knocking out BEC in 3 weeks last August. I'm also using Roger and he does a good job to keep you motivated. He's very engaging and I laugh during every lecture, which says something considering the material we are learning. Getting started is the hardest part.

    AUD - 83 1/8/16

    Hi ktlight90,

Your motivation should be getting that CPA license and the opportunities that come with that CPA license. In order to do that, you have to give up some things (leisure time with watching tv, playing games, social media, internet surfing, shopping, etc. or spending alot of time with family and friends). You must give those up. Studying should be your number one priority, even when you do not feel like it. If you are tired, take a nap. You have dream, think, and breathe the CPA exam until you pass.

I too failed AUD twice (once in 2012 and once in 2013) and I felt like giving up. But when I reflect back on why I really failed, I really truly did not put in the proper amount of study time with the material. I only studied a few units within my Gleim review course at the time hoping I could wing the actual CPA exam. I let spending time with family and my boyfriend, surfing the internet, playing games, and watching tv and videos take over my time from studying. Also an unfavorable event happened in my life during 2013 that totally made me lose focus on the CPA exam.

I took a 3 year break (even though the CPA exam still haunted me) and this time around for 2016, I am more focus and have set my mind on “all things CPA exam!” I also decided to start with a different section instead of AUD. I'm studying FAR right now. It's really mind over matter. And if you feel tired, take a nap, and once you wake up, get back to studying. Find the time and make time for study. Anytime you are idle (even at work), review material or take a few MCQs. Don't let outside influences like family and friends get in the way. You have to say NO to everything else!

Also get over that fear of failing again. That's what I had to get over in order to start over again. Best wishes to you. Hope this helps.

Began my CPA journey in 2012 using Gleim and mistakenly paid to take all 4 parts within 6 months:
AUD - 51, 47 (did not study properly)
REG - 39 (did not study at all, just took it on a whim)
Did not sit for FAR or BEC
    I gave up in 2013... 🙁

Resumed my CPA journey in 2016 using Gleim again with the following plan:
FAR - study Feb thru Jun, take exam 6/5/16
AUD - study Jun thru Aug, take exam 8/28/16
REG - study Sep thru Dec, take exam 12/4/16
BEC - study Dec thru Feb, take exam 2/26/17

I was the type to wait till 10pm the night before an exam to start studying (and subsequently fall asleep and do terrible on the exam)

But I'm really motivated for the CPA knowing that it is my chance to put myself on equal level with all the best people in accounting. I come from a state school in Los Angeles that is overshadowed by the likes of USC and UCLA. Passing the CPA will show that I have as good a foundation of accounting as someone from a top 10 business school. That's very motivating to me.

I'm tired when I get home from work and sometimes I know I'd rather be at the gym or watching TV. But I sit down in front of Roger because I keep that image “my future life” in my mind.

In regards to Roger, I've passed BEC and FAR using only his material for 95% of my studying. (I had to use Ninja Audio in car rides to remember FAR material) I took AUD yesterday and it was awful. I think I did ok on MCQ but the SIMS destroyed me. I finished the exam in 2 hours. I have to admit I could have studied a little better though.

    BEC - 78 (August 2015)
    FAR - 80 (November 2015)
AUD - 73, 67. (Ok I gotta confess I was even more lazy this time around)
    REG - August 27th, 2016

Thanks for the tips & advice. My plan is to hit the ground studying after April 15th. Work is so crazy right now, that I would be wasting my time trying to study after working 10-14 hours days. So hopefully all the Sunday's between now and then I can prepare myself to sleep, eat, & breathe CPA exam.
