Hi All,

This is my first CPA Exam, Audit and Assurance on Aug 26th, 2011. I have about 7 weeks to finish studying. I have been using mostly my 2010 Principles of Auditing Text Book , the AICPA Website, and the PCAOB Website for studying thus far. If I wanted to purchase one set of study materials to help me pass, which would you recommend for the best value? Are the Cheaper ones (Gleim & Wiley as good as Becker)?

Everyone uses a different respected review course. Since I used Becker, obviously I'm partial to the Becker course. However, this is the best advice I can give you. Look at a few pages of the books various programs use or look at tutorials on their websites. You'll need to find the course that works best with your learning/study style.

AUD is boring…Roger is a pretty interesting guy to watch on video.

Ultimately – watch the demos before you drop some $$. Very important.

I used the Wiley text, the Becker text but not the videos, and the Wiley test bank. I started out on FAR with just the Wiley text. It was OK, but the material is very condensed and tells you to read the ASC (or other relevant standards). That's fine when it's just a few, but sometimes it would list a dozen or more for a module. Wiley's great for the MCQ, though. I got a copy of the Becker text a couple of weeks after I began studying and it helped me a lot. I'd understood the material well when in school, but that had been 5 years. While still a review, Becker gave me enough detail to refresh me on the topics where I was rusty and Wiley was too abbreviated to be of much help. It was also written in a much easier to read format than Wiley. I did the MCQ in the Wiley text when first going thru a section and then did MCQ from the test bank during my review. There's minimal overlap with the text so this gave me lots of new problems to practice with. I also liked the test bank because it went much faster than doing the problems on paper and helped me increase my speed which is essential for FAR. I followed a similar method for the remainder of my exams, but added the Ninja notes and went over the Becker Passmaster problems for REG and BEC.

Which program works best for you depends on the way you learn, how fresh the material is for you, and how much money you are willing to spend. Each review course has its pros and cons, and they are not equally good for every exam. I found both Becker and Wiley to be worse for REG and BEC than FAR and AUD which is why I supplemented with additional materials. You can check the course sites for sample lessons to help you determine which one best fits your learning style. No matter which one you use, I'd recommend using a test bank during your review. Doing tons of MCQ is one of the best ways to prepare for the exam.
