Repaying Becker Fees to Firm

I currently work at a mid size firm and am planning to leave. I will have to repay the firm for my Becker course if I leave within a year of my start date.

I’m just curious if anyone has been in this position and knows roughly how much will have to be repaid? I’ve heard its not the full Becker price, but something more along the lines of $1,500-$2,000 that the firms paid for it.

I work for one of the largest, middle-market firms in my area and it provided Becker to all new hires. Last year I decided not to take it (cost is deducted from your bonus + needs to be reimbursed if you left within 2 years) but the paperwork showed the firm's cost was discounted by only $400. This year the firm is experimenting with SurgentCPA but new hires can still pay around $2,000 more for Becker.

Point is, if the firm does indeed ask you to reimburse it, I would expect to pay around $3,000. Big 4 gets preferential pricing because they go through thousands of new hires each year. Even then, I doubt it's as low as you think.

The firm I got hired at has a two year period where you have to pay it back if you leave within that time. However, the reimbursement is reduced after you complete your first year. Just refer to your paperwork/receipt, it should explicitly state what the reimbursement policy is.

    REG - 92 (1/17)

    BEC - 82 (2/17)

    AUD - 89 (5/17)

    FAR - 94 (9/17)

    AICPA Ethics Exam - 95 (9/17)

Thanks all. To be more clear, my receipt says $0 because the firm paid for my materials directly and I will have to fully reimburse the firm for their cost of Becker.

    Hi all,

I'm wanting to transfer from KPMG to a mid-market firm (which has the same deal with Becker), but I'm already signed up with Becker through KPMG. Do you think the smaller firm would pay the 2 grand or whatever Becker costs to get me out since I would have to pay for it myself when I leave? They would pay for it through their Becker subscription if I would've started with them anyways…anybody have any experience with this?

@Hi Pal I would discuss that directly with your new firm. A good firm would do it.
