Becker Question – Does anybody else feel like F10 is a lot heavier on details than the F9 for Gov’t Accounting? I’m not fully understanding F10 (especially later modules) like I do with F9. I wanted to see if anybody else is on the same page and could share any tips.

it is a lot heavier and far more detailed, no tips other than keep going over mcq and looking back at the book.

@eas0014-what helped me, as I kind of stumbled my way through F10, I then did all of the gov't accounting MCQ in Ninja and read the book after, both F9 and F10 together-all the way through-it makes much more sense the second time around!

It's detailed because many CPA candidates have no prior governmental accounting accounting experience, so Becker takes the approach that everybody is seeing it for the first time. That contrasts to the rest of Becker's approach, which is review.

In the Ninja Plus videos, Bob Monette repeatedly mentions that if you know the basics of governmental accounting, rather than the details, you'll pick up most of the grading points. Even though those videos are dated, I think his advice is timeless, and even more applicable now that the current generation exam deemphasized governmental accounting (compared to the previous generations, at least). At least that was the case when I took the exam on Monday.

I think the best way to understand the flow of information in F9 and F10 is by understanding the financial reporting structure for governmental entities (presented in F9). If you understand why you are doing what you are doing, it makes it a lot easier to understand the details. F9 is very focused on your GRaSPP funds and F10 goes into your SE PAPI funds and then explains the presentation of your fund financials, govt-wide financials, reconciliations, notes, and required supp info. It's easy to get lost into the nitty gritty of the topics but try to focus on the areas Tim Gearty emphasizes on. You'll quickly find that some information in F10 is repetitive (for ex. the financial presentation for all 3 funds which was already covered in F9). The good thing is, while these two chapters are very time consuming on your first go, because they are also the last two chapters, you will be surprised at how much your recall come review time. Just take the time to really understand them in the first go.
