I just barely finished Section 2 Chapter 3 of FAR, every time I open the book i get bored and start youtube videos, yesterday i was supposed to finish the third section but all i did was watch stupid youtube videos and go on reddit till 11:30pm. I was supposed to sleep at 10pm and wake up at 4am to start studying. None of this happened. On top of that I have to look for a better position to fulfill this stupid work experience requirement, so far i have put in two applications. Can someone suggest what I can do to stop being so unproductive after work. This is my schedule.

    8 to 5 work
5-630-ish get home..depending on how late i get off work
6:30 to 8-ish walk the dogs and entertain them till they are satisfied, they can be very very demanding
8 to 10 try to focus on job applications/studying

i am single and have no kids. my semester starts next week and i am taking two accounting classes, one online and one in person.

I wish I had your amount of time and responsibilities while studying for the CPA. I have 5 kids to come home to and running a house on my own. Truthfully, all I hear are excuses. Most of us are guilty of this. I know I've been having trouble concentrating lately. I just really don't want to study. The difference between everyone is who is actually going to do it anyway.

I don't know your specific careers goals, but if you want to work on public accounting, I would suggest you become more comfortable with criticism.

Get the audio asap and listen while you are walking the dogs, thats an hour and a half of studying right there.

Also google the pomodoro technique. You'll thank me.

Finally, stop believing internal dialogue such as “can't study over 30 minutes”. Of course you can, you simply choose not to.

I think studying for a CPA is a brutal process for everyone: single, married, students, employed/unemployed.

If you REALLY want it you will find a way to commit and motivate yourself. I have a family, kids, pets and a full time demanding job.

My day starts at 5:30 am to get some house work out of the way
I head out to work at 7:30 am after taking my kids to school.
I get home at 7-8 pm, take care of my family
Start studying at around 8-9 PM. I give myself about half an hour for stupid youtube videos (everyone needs those in their lives!) 🙂
    Bed time 1-2 am.

I am running on low batteries with 4 hours of sleep but I REALLY want to get my CPA and unless I motivate myself there is no one in the world who can.

I did use Ninja audio for one of my sections and that added an hour of study time during my commute to and from work.

Schedule your exam, set a goal and work towards it.

@mjbey1s you know exactly what my point is. And no, being nice isn't what I was meaning to do.

If you want to pass the CPA exam, it will be your life for the duration of your study. You have some free time, not much at all though. You have to make sacrifices, this exam doesn't work around your schedule. I went to bed at 1AM, waking up at 6AM for about 9 months straight. There is nothing like it in an undergrad or even graduate program.

I also like to come here and help people, but expecting to be able to pass this test with minimal effort or have it work around you really irks me, and I do not care to help people that don't care enough to help themselves, because they will be in that Prometric center by themselves, no one is going to help you. You could even argue this test is more of a test of drive and determination more than it is of being a good accountant.

And as much as OP thinks I am just being mean, which is obvious I don't care. I am not rooting against her, I am actually rooting for her. I had much rather me tell her that she has lazy habits/excuses ahead of time than NASBA when they release scores.

Well said @Mitch. I think the OP was looking for a kick in the rear and that is exactly what is being serviced.

I don't think one would show up here with a post like this expecting everyone to say that it's ok and not to worry, keep doing what you are doing and you will pass the exam. 🙂

I'm working on this same issue – only my weakness is Facebook. I took FAR last weekend and don't think I passed. As of this week, I am cutting down on Facebook time as I begin my AUD studies. I'm trying to limit myself to this forum only, and Roger CPA Review website. BTW – stay FAR AWAY from Reddit. That website is absolute poison. The majority of the people on there are fat arrogant a-holes who lost their jobs, gave up on life, and now dine 4 times a day on pizza and Coke and the only joy of their lives is insulting people and trying to drag everyone down to their level. About a year ago I posted something on there, hoping to get some advice. I wanted to know about working for a Big 4 firm. I'm a tad older than most people who take the CPA exam (age 40, I'm 41 this year, thank God I still pass for 30 and get carded sometimes haha.) But anyway, I made the comment “I don't think I would want to work alongside cocky new college grads on an audit team.” About 20 people – no, not exaggerating on that number – absolutely tore me a new one…LOL They saw my weaknesses and just decided to snowball me, telling me that I had no chance of ever succeeding. Bottom line – Reddit is a breeding ground for bottom-feeding losers. It's a very negative forum. If you're going on there for recreational purposes, like to chat with people about a hobby or something, then maybe it's ok. As far as anything career-related, I'd stick with this forum right here. It's really one of the best.

And regarding the dogs, yes they're like children and need attention, but they also need training and should be able to easily walk together at the same time or walk for anyone else but you. Can you imagine if a parent said their kids wouldn't listen to them and couldn't be left with a sitter because they behaved even worse? Dogs don't make the rules they follow them.
