saw an episode of Silicon valley about a child prodigy programmer who needed ritalin to perform at a stellar level. recently ritalin was mentioned again, amongst college students, at my local barber shop. Just curious… obviously if the individual has prescriptions for it then no harm or foul. however, curious to know how many people (who don’t need the prescription) taking the exams are taking ritalin for that competitive edge.

    eh, don't bother.

most stimulants are not a sustainable & viable way of progressing in your career. You're bound to crash sooner or later. Think long-term.

Have yourself a cup of coffee, and put the time in.

    Good luck.

Kids at school did so they could pull all-nighters before tests. I never did though. I imagine if it happens for a MAcc program then it definitely happens for the CPA exam.

Especially if someone is about to lose credit – desperation makes people do unusual things

I have no doubt that some people will do just about anything to get what they want…especially if it gives them an edge. Look at professional sports the use of PED's. The prospect of success can make people do bad things, to themselves or others.

Lol, I'm sure many candidates take it unprescribed. Can you blame them?

My brother is prescribed some amphetamine salt to assist with his ADD and he can sit down and crank out work for a solid 8-10 hours. Shame my parents hound over it. Jokes.

And I wouldn't expect people to admit to it here lol.

I take it prescribed. It makes a difference both for studying and at work.

Don't you remember the end of that episode? The kid ended up being a fraud and didn't really know what he was doing.

Coffee = caffeine = stimulant = Red Bull. Many, many people abuse caffeine in the same way. Ritalin has some sort of stigma just b/c it's stronger. Meh…same as three cups of coffee.

@ijustwant, while I agree with the underlying point of your statement, there is a reason many of these amphetamine salts are controlled substances and caffeine isn't..

Caffeine has never helped me much, but I still drink a cup everyday driving to work because it's effing delicious. I am pretty sure I have undiagnosed narcolepsy in some small level. The amount of sleep/naps I need is insane or I literally cannot function and body shuts down. I'm currently on a certain medication for ADD and it's exponentially helped me. Never have to take naps anymore and my brain fog is gone. I can finish things that I start. I failed all 4 exams without being on it before I passed 3 in a row once I got my prescription. However, this medication shouldn't be used if you aren't seen by a doc first. It's very dangerous and addicting and can negatively affect you.

@samdiegoCPA. NO joke, what exactly are you taking =) ? I'm going to go to my doctor to ask for the same thing. Do you need to seriously have ADD or can I just say that I have short attention span and would like to supplement with this ADD-type medication you're taking? What negative things have you noticed? thx!

I'm gonna guess @sams taking aderol :), which is what most college kids take nowadays… not ritalin.

Even some non-college takes adderall. My sister got some doctor she never seen before prescribe it to her (told him she couldn't focus) so that she could lose weight. She was a happily married mother of two. Now she is in the middle of a divorce and dating some loser that has nothing going for him. She is a whole different person. Adderall is nothing to mess around with. Can really effect you negatively if you don't really need it.

My cousin is a PHD student and he takes Modafinil. The guy is already very smart, but he says that in order to compete at MIT, he needs to take it. I did a search and found the following=
