Pretty lax on studying but getting lucky and still passing… am I the only one? - Page 4

So I’ve been on this journey for a little over a year and I have passed all sections but FAR. I passed BEC first try with a 77, passed AUD on second try (67 then 86), passed REG on third try (65, 58, then 84), and am now taking FAR here in three weeks for the third time (failed it with a 74 and then 73; #frustrating).

I will be the first to admit, though, that my study habits are still extremely poor. I go out almost every weekend with friends. I will bring audit work home with me from my full-time job and it gets priority over studying, and getting my daily workout in also takes priority over studying (as does sleep). On all the sections I’ve passed, I watched Becker lectures in the background while doing other things. I completed roughly 70% of the required MCQs, have done zero Becker task-based simulations, and done none of the practice tests. I have rationalized this with the notion that I could have passed everything the first go around, but giving up social time in my early twenties just isn’t worth it.

I’m scared that this won’t work for FAR though, and that my last two scores were extremely lucky. Today I purchased the Wiley FAR mobile app to review in bed before I doze off to sleep and got the NINJA audio for my commute to work. My Becker software expires December 31st.

Am I the only one that has skid through these tests feeling like I’ve gotten lucky on all of them and really didn’t deserve it? I am in some serious need of motivation as I sit here in the public library looking over FAR material for the first time in 7 months. I have until May 31st before BEC expires but I want to get this sucker knocked out before christmas. Helllllllpppp meeeeee. Someone please give me the motivation and strength to carry on.

If it takes me three years I might just jump off a cliff. Motivation will come more strongly the closer I get to a previously passed portion expiring. Ya dig?

I don't know why everyone is so hard on him. Some people have to work less hard maybe because of intelligence or maybe because they have better retention out of college. Perhaps it is luck.

He failed five exams and he keeps on moving towards his goal. 6 years ago I studied really hard for an exam then failed and never tried again. Everyone has their own path but we all come together at the end when we get our CPA license.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I'm sorry colb for my initial reaction. I perceived you as completely passing on luck and not really caring. We all know just how much luck goes into passing sometimes. I guess my word of advice now is better buckle down for a bit to get this process over that way you get back doing the things you enjoy in life more. I for one was not as lucky as you as you can se in my signature. You are so close don't draw this out any longer and take all the advice listed above. You're wording just rubbed me the wrong way, ‘skidding' through and failing 5 times don't go hand in hand. But now I better understand your posts. Good luck, genuinely

@ colb425: Nope. Don't dig. Define your definition of motivation. Can you lock yourself in your room and only study for a whole week; while ignoring the rest of the world? If you can't change it then, what makes you so sure that you can change it now? But if you can change, good for you

    FAR - 62 (10/2/13), 50 (5/30/14)
    AUD - 73 (10/30/13), 66 (5/6/14)
    REG - 69 (4/8/14)
    BEC - 66 (2/27/13), 73 (4/21/14)

I think you received the reaction you did because of how you wrote your post. After reading your follow up comment I think you do care and you just want to be done like the rest of us. I struggle everyday with motivation. I miss a lot with my family and I am exhausted. I think you should put your friends on the back burner for a while and just focus on getting this done. If you haven't really put forth the effort yet and still passed (even after a couple of fails) then you should have no problem passing this last one with an increased, intense effort.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words. Now that I read my heading it does sound pretty arrogant. I meant to say I've passed without the dedication so far that I know I need going forward to pass FAR. I absolutely need to be dedicated going forward. And I think I can do it now that I keep my mind focused on the goal. We all have the same enemy to conquer we can do it… we all can and will do it if we stick to it.

@KADFC, it's more of an urgency thing. When I know something has to be done I get it done. To me retaking a section that I have already passed would be devastating, given that I've already failed 5 tests and could easily fail them again. That is how my motivation would be generated. For example, in college I was the student that waited all semester to do his season long project until the week it was due and didn't sleep until for 2-3 days straight, running entirely on caffeine and fear of failure. It might be irrational, but I know that the sense of urgency works for me.

@CR7, I never actually got prescribed adderall and have yet to take it for the test. Funny you ask, because I have an appointment to talk to my physician about it on Tuesday morning. Perhaps this condition is what causes my problems with sticking to a solid study habit, but to be honest sometimes I feel like ADD is nothing more than a crippling will power, and that anything that can be accomplished with adderall can be accomplished without it. I know when I was in college the entire engineering department at my school ran off of that pill, and nobody was prescribed it, so I've been told it works for anyone. Now I know there are side effects, so who really knows.

I must be missing something. How can someone who's failed 5 exams be arrogant?

    FAR - 87 (7/19/13)
    BEC - 82 (8/29/13)
    REG - 86 (10/18/13)
    AUD - 91 (12/06/13)
