Pretty lax on studying but getting lucky and still passing… am I the only one? - Page 3

So I’ve been on this journey for a little over a year and I have passed all sections but FAR. I passed BEC first try with a 77, passed AUD on second try (67 then 86), passed REG on third try (65, 58, then 84), and am now taking FAR here in three weeks for the third time (failed it with a 74 and then 73; #frustrating).

I will be the first to admit, though, that my study habits are still extremely poor. I go out almost every weekend with friends. I will bring audit work home with me from my full-time job and it gets priority over studying, and getting my daily workout in also takes priority over studying (as does sleep). On all the sections I’ve passed, I watched Becker lectures in the background while doing other things. I completed roughly 70% of the required MCQs, have done zero Becker task-based simulations, and done none of the practice tests. I have rationalized this with the notion that I could have passed everything the first go around, but giving up social time in my early twenties just isn’t worth it.

I’m scared that this won’t work for FAR though, and that my last two scores were extremely lucky. Today I purchased the Wiley FAR mobile app to review in bed before I doze off to sleep and got the NINJA audio for my commute to work. My Becker software expires December 31st.

Am I the only one that has skid through these tests feeling like I’ve gotten lucky on all of them and really didn’t deserve it? I am in some serious need of motivation as I sit here in the public library looking over FAR material for the first time in 7 months. I have until May 31st before BEC expires but I want to get this sucker knocked out before christmas. Helllllllpppp meeeeee. Someone please give me the motivation and strength to carry on.

I say kudos to colb425. He is doing it the way we all wanted to…in our early 20s…without sacrificing our social lives….without the stress of multiple failures….without the discouragement…

    I don't he's being cocky…just honest.

Good luck on your last part!

    AUD - 75
    BEC - 75
    FAR - 76
    REG - 76
I want those initials next to my name!!!!

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 75
    BEC - 75
    REG - 76

Now I need some experience!!! And some networking...

MINTS!!!!!! :). All I can say is that I am trying. I am in Georgia with Dad as he prepares to go to heaven very, very soon. It's been a challenge with the surgery and recovery and dealing with this too. I rescheduled for Nov 30 and I will do my level headed best but if it's not enough… Well I will just have to restudy AUD. Seriously hoping that is not the case but … I'm trying. :/.

Your comments don't upset me like they do some, even though I like many others have put in significant study time taking precious time from my family (which in my opinion far outweighs a social life), in order to pass these exams and move on with my life. The reason it doesn't bother me is because I don't particularly agree with you that you are skating through these exams. Yeah you have passed three exams with what you consider minimal effort, but you have also failed five times. There are posters on here that take all four exams in a window and walk away with all 80's and 90's, to me that is someone who is clearly just gifted and this comes relatively easy for. I don't think people are upset that you haven't studied hard ,they are upset because you seem to wear it with pride. I wish you the best of luck on your exam, but as you said in your post do you really deserve it?

    AUD - 2/2013 - Passed!
    BEC - 5/2013 - Passed!
    FAR - 8/2013 - Passed!
    REG - 11/2013 - Passed!

Whoa, tough crowd… definitely did not expect flack from this post.

I didn't intend to post this with pride, or belittle the efforts of others. I admire those with the work ethic and dedication that I lack, as it will surely get them further in all aspects of life. Like @jaredo155 said, I have failed 5 freaking times… I get severe test anxiety, so I would just not think about studying to keep from a freakout, then after failing a section I would feel very energized and motivated for a few days, only to fall back into my routine of neglecting my studies.

As of yesterday I still had the feeling of, “ohh you still have two test windows to pass this test. no worries” and as true as that is,and as sure of it that I will eventually pass, it would be great to close this chapter of my life.

@MintsRGood, thanks buddy. this post is the catalyst to give me strength to continue.

@Study Monk, let's get this sht done! Starting today.

@CR7, apparently I really like you guys? haa. No, dragging it out is silly and when you put it that way it does motivate me. Thanks.

@Jaredo155, I don't think I'm skating through. Like I said, I am getting lucky. I get the overarching concepts down, go into the tests, try to manage my time well and use the test to take the test. I simply never dedicated enough time to get down specifics and details. My only triumph is in the fact that I was able to retain just enough each time I failed to build on for my next attempt. I did always study pretty hard the week before the tests.

And just an FYI to everyone, I am printing off this thread and posting it on my wall to read every morning. I didn't go to the gym today, am skipping watching the Mizzou football game (and the Sporting KC MLS playoff game) and I would study late into the night if it wasn't for a date that was already planned with a pretty lady. No excuses. The only one keeping any of us from conquering this test is ourselves. Let's get to work.

Getting crazy about studying right mow!

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Philosophically, I am a fatalist, and sometimes, I feel that life guides you where it wants regardless of what you want.

I originally wanted to be a writer, and through the twists and turns of my life, it guided me away from creative pursuits to accounting through employment, then accounting through education, and then studying for the CPA.

Do I still want to be creative and a writer….yeah! But it is not the feasible choice in my life so here I am.

If you are meant to pass the CPA, then you will pass it. Heck, I think anyone can pass it eventually if you ignore your emotions and not care too much when you pass all the parts.

To be honest, I don't think you need motivation. I also don't see how this is easy for you. It's not like you passed 3 sections on your first try without studying at all. Plus, you've failed more than once and you have decided to keep on going at it. I'm having a hard time just from one failure and continuing; while you have multiples of them and you're still continuing. You'll eventually turn into one of those “I passed the CPA in 3+ years”, but at least you get to pass. That's all that matters right?

I think the reason why a lot of people don't want to support your way of life is that they want to finish all sections ASAP without having to retake any of them (they want to have their life back NOW!). You, on the other hand, is living a different lifestyle and they envy that, but that's not what they are determined to do. “You should fail and fail some more. I don't like your lifestyle so I hope you get punished for it.” “I want to finish all section without having to retake any of them. First try if possible.” That's how I see it at least.

    FAR - 62 (10/2/13), 50 (5/30/14)
    AUD - 73 (10/30/13), 66 (5/6/14)
    REG - 69 (4/8/14)
    BEC - 66 (2/27/13), 73 (4/21/14)

If it takes me three years I might just jump off a cliff. Motivation will come more strongly the closer I get to a previously passed portion expiring. Ya dig?
