    Hi everyone,

I passed all my exams in Dec of 2013 and got licensed as a CPA in the middle of last year. At my firm we have cubicles for the staff accountants and also offices that supervisors and seniors get to share. Well me and a Senior accountant were both going for our CPA’s in 2012 and 2013. I passed my exams and the Senior did not pass theirs. In fact that the senior has now ultimately decided not to pursue her CPA anymore.

Since that time my billing rate has increased to the same as theirs….. and for this upcoming tax season, the managing partner has told me that my billing rate will now be higher than the Senior accountants and my title will now the same or actually a higher titled position than theirs.

He also brought up if I don’t like the fact the I’m still in a windowless cubicle while my co-worker (who has decided not to pursue the CPA designation after being unable to complete the exams with a passing score), Has an Office…and To be honest, it does. My billing rate is higher than theirs and management has told me that my skill level has surpassed theirs in many areas of tax and accounting.

My question to you all is this……..I know if we switch desks, it would be awkward in the office, but at the same time, I have earned my spot in the firm through hard work and through hours of studying to advance my skill to get my billing rate up……..So, should I feel bad or not try and push the issue? Or should I tell him that I do deserve the switch and push the issue (he already told me that he is strongly considering it before I even brought the topic up)?

    Thank you for your input.

So what about the other posters who agreed with me…are they arrogant “A” holes too?

Or is it that some aren't afraid of competition and others are?

I'm guessing most have never competed for anything and think they are entitled to things just because they have been there longer. WHAT A Joke. hahahahhaa

Have fun TROLLS and keep bottom feeding thinking that your entitled to things solely based on the fact that you've been there longer, and not based on performance.

    It's sad

Okay lets not get it twisted, I feel that you passing the CPA is good demonstration of your skill and hard work and is a quantifiable objective measure. Taking 3 hours versus 5 hours to finish a project has many different factors outside of ‘skill'. Maybe one individual flew through the process but didn't really understand the purpose of doing something while the slower person took time to research and understand the big picture.

I remember that I was working a responsibility, my manager at the time used it as a negative against me that it took me several hours to do… she said that it shouldn't take any longer than an hour. She fast tracked into promotions, and later after her being promoted and was on maternity leave, me and my new manager found that the way she had been doing it for years was riddled with errors and was showing assets as liabilities in the disclosures to the financial statements. Office politics was on her side though so it was swept under the rug.

Point being, yes it's good that you got the CPA, I think that education and certifications should be more highly regarded at work than it is and in my eyes it's a huge one-up on your colleague – but what matters most at the work place is less actual skill and more soft ‘skills', who you know, and who is willing to mentor, vouch, and support you.

Agreed. I am just saying that we put in so much hard work and effort to become CPA's…you have to dedicate your life to passing the exams..and if someone else quits taking the exam because they don't want to put the same effort that you did….but gets the same benefits…then which one kills moral more?

Its not like they are still at it…trying to pass the exam. The straight up quit trying and said they aren't going to try anymore because it is to hard. That is what I am saying.

The CPA exam is hard…if I knew that people who quit trying and give up aren't going to suffer any consequences and rep the same rewards as someone who did…then why would anyone become a CPA and take the exams in the place?

I bet that the only reason this senior has an office over you is because she is grammatically superior. She probably spent hours and hours longer than you studying how to utilize “your” vs “you're” in the proper context.

You should probably put in more of your own time researching. Once you do that you will most definitely get that office.
