Am I dumb to quit when I have 3/4 passed? - Page 2

I now have passed FAR, BEC, and AUD. I’ve taken REG since then and failed multiple times. I cannot for the life of me get myself to get up to study and take this exam another time. I have one, maybe two more opportunities to pass REG before I start losing sections but I don’t even want to bother.

The issue is I’ve known for a while I don’t really want this credential but I only just came to terms with it. It’s only something I’m doing because people at work want me to. Not only that but studying for the CPA has made me hate accounting to the point where I’m considering a career change after this next busy season, making it even less motivating for me to finish the exams.

Basically the only thing kind of tying me to the exam process right now is the fact that I’m “only” one pass away. Talk about a sunk-cost fallacy. Does the CPA really have any utility outside of the accounting world? I feel like there’s no way all this time and energy is worth it.

@CPA_VT Congrats on your license and enjoy tax! I finally found my niche with a small well established law firm working with 2 attorneys whose expertise is estate and trusts. My niche is individual, fiduciary, estate and gift tax returns. We partner with a bank whose trust dept is the trustee and I prepare the returns. I have missed out building expertise with business returns but they seem like a headache I can skip. Besides my individual returns have some complex schedules c, e and f and combos of all those schedules. I work hard during tax season, then lighter the rest of the year but it is year round. I am paid well.
I encourage you to join your state society of CPAs. I participate in a tax workgroup that now meets online and share knowledge and resources with other practitioners. It is a great resource and our in-person meetings will resume one day and be even better.
Your state society will also have an annual event recognizing you as a new CPA. Mine was online but it felt really good. I got a very nice CPA pin too!
For CPE, I never pay and use cpaacademy.com and mycpe.com for my credits. I would pay but have not found a good reason to because the free offerings are very good. I am constantly doing CPE beyond what is required because there is so much to know.
Enjoy your new profession! Congrats on your perfect ethics score! Your Dad would be so proud of you!
    Happy New Year!🎈🎊

The reason why you will perfer to have a license has nothing to do with your job.

You better just get it so when someone is mean to you … You can show your license and swing it right at their face and said “I got a license, you don't.”

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to change job right now, under COVID.

If you hate your job that much, it's time to level up to be a manager. Get the license and hire 10 interns to do the job. Now you don't have to work accounting, you just have to sign paper.

I would just quit. A CPA is pointless. You don't need a certification for something you can do without. Instead of studying thousands of hours for years, put that time into thinking of what you really love and want to do with your life and put those hours into that. Trust me.

There is a long list of things you can do with a CPA than without…just ask anyone in public accounting. You will also get paid better and beat out non-CPA's for jobs. Don't believe me, just look at how many job postings say “CPA required” or “CPA preferred”.
