Geemoney713ParticipantThis exam isn't worth doing. I don't even really care if I had passed all 4 parts on my first try. It just isn't worth the stress and time that gets put into it. Not to mention the thousands of dollars that are spent to take it and the thousands that are spent to get study materials. The stress of waiting for your scores and then not truly knowing what your weak points are once you receive your score.
If I ever have the chance to talk to someone young considering this exam, I will wholeheartedly recommend not getting involved with it.

MinimortyParticipant@geemoney – that is a pretty short-sighted comment. I am glad the barrier to entry is high. It should be. I would wholeheartedly recommend the CPA journey. You learn a lot about yourself in the process too.

AnonymousInactiveMini,
I don't think I like what I am learning about myself! LOL
I just need to be done with this!

KasiaSParticipantI agree with Minimorty completely. Sure, this exam has played many dirty games on my body and mind but I'm glad I'm doing it. I know this will pay for itself in the long run through the prestige and pay that comes with being a CPA. More importantly, I wouldn't have met the amazing people I have through this site if I hadn't embarked on getting the CPA. If it were easy to get the certification, everyone would have it and the benefits wouldn't be what they are today.
I can't even imagine how amazing it'll feel to see that last passing score concluding this journey. It hasn't been easy but, like Mini said, I've learned so much about myself and about the circle of support I have both, at home and here.

MinimortyParticipant@David – Haha. Yeah, I never said that you would like everything you learn about yourself. Its definitely an interesting process though. You are close (and maybe done, right?). Good luck on score release!

Soon2beCPA2011MemberHey Mini,
I know its a little late, but Congrats on passing BEC and being done with this exam! I know you were a little concerned about the memos, but looks like it all paid off 😉

Geemoney713ParticipantI don't think I'll really ever see any benefit of getting the license. The true benefit should be inherent in the learning and the skills the license represents. The test doesn't feel like it's built to see if people learn, it's built to keep people from getting the license. If it were to test on people's knowledge, then it would be a percentage based test instead of a test comparing you to others. They just want to keep the passing rates low, not see if people have a certain threshold of knowledge.
I am almost finished with the exam, but I don't feel that I'm any better of an accountant now than I was before studying. The only true improvement in my accounting skills has been from my own work experiences.
Another point is how they allow exam scores to expire. If you've passed BEC and someone else passed BEC the same day, but then you struggle with some of the other exams but they pass all quickly, how are they any better at you at BEC than you are? You've passed with the same knowledge of that topic, but yet yours is now meaningless toward your license.

mandy8041MemberGeemoney- everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yes, they do allow the credits to expire and grade based on a comparison to others just to make it that much more difficult. If the pass rate was at 75%, the pay and prestige of a CPA would not exist. What makes it so prestigious is the ability to get it. I don't necessarily think I have improved my accounting skills since I work in public accounting already and deal with FAR and REG all the time, but I do know my license will help me get promotions, raises and job opportunities in the future because it shows perseverance and determination as well as having the designation in general is desirable.

mla1169ParticipantI think actual knowledge is a significant portion of the process but not 100% of what counts (maybe 75%). The balance is about endurance.
Its a lot like a college degree. I am sure it is entirely possible to do many jobs without a degree but what an employer wants to know is just how committed is an employee to following through with something they start?

MinimortyParticipant@geemoney – If you dont think that there will be any benefits from obtaining the license, why continue with the exams? Why did you even start taking the exams? Look, we understand that you are frustrated. However, saying that there will be no benefit to obtaining your license is a little ridiculous. People take the exams for different reasons. Personal satisfaction and a feeling of fulfillment is a valid reason for taking and passing the exam. This is a personal benefit that one can receive from the exam. Most people take the exam for career advancement and additional compensation. This is another benefit that can be derived from the exam. The designation is only as good as what you make of it. If you pass the exam and feel like crap and go into hiding for the rest of your life, then sure, you may not receive any benefit from it. It is pretty commonly accepted that the CPA license will open doors, move forward your career, and increase your pay over the long run. Is passing the exam tough? Yes. As I mentioned above, I am glad that the exam is tough and the passing rates are low. Low passing rates just add to the value of the designation. The exam is not so difficult that it cannot be passed. It just takes hard work and dedication. Those who survive the process are rewarded. Those who choose to give up are not meant to be CPAs.

AnonymousInactiveCandidates from TX, have you guys checked if new scores are posted this afternoon? I know few people who check every 30 minutes. Lol
Now that's just mean:).
November 29, 2011 at 8:02 pm #316020
mandy8041MemberDavid- have not checked since I know TX only releases once a day at 430. I feel like calling and trying to get them to tell me a day early though so still pretty pathetic.
