VA License – Managerial Accounting Credit

Now that i passed all the exams, I am seeking to be license in VA, the state where I currently reside.

In order to be licensed in VA, i will need to get some sort of “intermediate” managerial accounting credits, because VA board says “introductory accounting courses cannot be considered”. Unfortunately, the 2 managerial accounting credits I have was considered introductory…

I am looking to take such a course in a community college just to satisfy the educational requirement (but too cheap to pay $1,000 on it), but couldn’t find any “intermediate” managerial accounting courses in schools like Nova and Phoenix. Any VA candidates know where to find a class recognized by the state board?

    Thanks

    I'm in VA.

Are you sure you don't have the managerial accounting satisfied? I'm pretty sure you need to have the accounting courses satisfied in order to start taking the exam.

If not – I would consider a community college. I took two courses at Northern VA Community College online to satisfy my additional accounting course – I would look around at other community colleges most offer distance learning at this point.

    BEC - PASS JULY 2014
    FAR - PASS DEC 2014
    AUD - PASS FEB 2015
    REG - PASS MAY 2015

I did all of my accounting courses at NVCC. Intermediate I and II, Tax I and II, Cost, Adv, Govt and Non Prof, and Aud. There's all your courses right there for the VA requirement on the accounting side. All good teachers, no problems.

    BEC - 78
    AUD - 75
    REG - 74, 79
    FAR - 75

You have to buy a ticket to win the raffle.

For the VA license is the experience required to be signed by a CPA? I have international work experience but none under a CPA. I tried calling the state board but no one ever picks up. Is there an email id i can mail my query to?

    Finally done!!! Experience-pending. Ethics- Pending.

Pia, I would try using the VBOA's live chat feature. There's usually not a very long wait on there and they've always been able to answer my questions via that medium. And if no one is available when you initiate a chat, you have the option to then send an email through the chat to them.

Chnbsb, so long as you took a non-introductory Cost Accounting course as part of your degree you won't need to find an intermediate Managerial Accounting course. The VBOA Education Handbook (https://www.boa.virginia.gov/Docs/EducationHandbook.pdf) has on Page 1 a requirement of “Cost or Managerial.” I'm pretty sure that most candidates meet this requirement with a Cost Accounting course- I know I did and it looks like Lion_of_the_Rock did as stated above.

ibCPAsoon, I registered my exams in Maine. Now that I am working and living in VA, I am thinking about getting licensed here, so that is why I needed the additional credit. Maine's requirement was pretty straight forward, you need to be 18+ and have a bachelor's degree, and that's it. I believe Maine changed its requirement during the years as well.

Lion_of_the_Rock and Amandilee, thanks for your answer! It seems like cost accounting from NVCC will satisfy VA board's requirement on managerial accounting. I'll contact the board to make sure.

Allegra, this is what the VBOA has posted on their “Become a Virginia CPA” website in regards to qualifying experience:

“Pursuant to Board Regulation 18VAC5-22-100: Prior to applying for a license, an individual must have been employed in academia, a firm, government, or industry in any capacity involving the substantial use of accounting, financial, tax, or other skills that are relevant, as determined by the VBOA, to providing services to the public using the CPA title or to an employer using the CPA title for a period that is the full-time equivalent of one year. Whether other skills are relevant shall be determined by the VBOA on a case-by-case basis. Self-employment does not meet the definition of experience in accordance with § 54.1-4400, Code of Virginia.”

I would think based on that you'd definitely have your year (and then some!) of experience as an accountant in private industry, you'll just need to have whoever your supervisor was/is fill out the experience verification form for you when you're ready to apply for your license.

hmm… interesting. that would make my job search a hell of a lot easier if I dont have to search specifically for a public accounting job with a CPA…
