Transferring States while in Licensure Process

    Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation as I currently am, or may just have advice in general. I am currently in the process of fulfilling my 1 year of experience in order to attain licensure in MA.(Have 1500ish out of 2000 hours). I passed all sections of the exam and have 150+ hours.

Due to circumstances in my family I will have to relocate to NY for the near future (at least the next 5-7 years). After reading NY’s policy on Licensure By Endorsement (Requires substantial equivalency which I have AND 4 years of work experience with your licensure) it looks like I will have to apply for initial licensure in NY even if I attain licensure in MA before I move.

I will likely just transfer my scores to NY and work towards meeting the requirements for initial licensure there. Am I correct in understanding that the location of your work experience does not matter as long as you are working under a CPA who is properly licensed in their jurisdiction? I am concerned that my hours worked will not apply and I will have to work an additional year in NY to get NY licensure.

If anyone has any insight I would much appreciate it.

You worried too much. NY boarder with different states. Depends on where you are, you are going to find co-workers who work in NY but hold NJ / CT licenses. NYS board accept all 50-state license signatures as long as they are comparable (not limited CPA license status). It will definitely work.

If you believe you will be in NY within 3 months, you sure start applying for license. The licensing process is long and will require you to transfer the score and submit transcripts. NY has slow processing time.

One more thing @OP you can only get one initial license. If you get licensed in MA then you will be subject to the 4 years of accounting experience for a NY license. Your best route may be to get your initial license in NY.

I should have reviewed NY before my prior post (which I cannot edit) you can apply for a NY Initial license if you are licensed in another state but have less than four years experience. My bad. Good luck 🍀
