So I see people post about this but I can’t really find an answer. (and I wrote to NYS dep of ed and got a bounceback message saying they were understaffed and would not be able to answer my question in less than 20 days…)

My question is this: I have my undergrad in Accounting from a major state university. I currently have 139 hours so I need to take some more classes but need to figure out what I need.

So New York state requires 33 acounting hours which it defines here: https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpa150hour.htm

I have 28 hours that are pure accounting. But I then have MANY hours of finance courses that are listed on my transcript under finance but I feel should probably count toward the ed requirement. these include:

    Financial Instrument & Markets

    Financial Mgmt I & II

    Business Strategy

Anyone have experience applying finance courses toward your Accounting credit requirement in NYS?

I am in a similar situation (accounting & finance dual major) applying to NYS. When NASBA evaluated my transcripts for eligibility to sit for the exam, they did not count any finance credits towards the 33 semester hours. They only counted classes that had accounting course numbers.

    AUD (Q2 2015) - 93
    FAR (Q2 2015) - 85
    REG (Q3 2015) - 80
    BEC (Q3 2015) - 82

Blah, I have a feeling I am going to need to take two more accounting courses then.

hpj154: When I sent my transcript in to sit for the exam I just got approved to sit, they didn't give me any sort of breakdown of my educational recs. Did you have to request this?

I received an email from the NYS coordinator at the same time I received my NTS. It wasn't anything that I had to request. I would call NASBA or the state board to find out for sure.

Finance courses do not count at Accounting courses for CPA Licensure in NYS. It does however count towards the general business courses requirement. I know this I spoke with a Rep from my College who's sole responsibility is to advise students who are the CPA track. I gradudated with my BBA in Accountancy with 30 accounting credits (note I took a finance course as required for BBA that does not count towards what NYS considers to be Accounting courses for initial Licensing.

THE 300 CLUB WILL DO JUST FINE!
