If you know that your testing center is efficient with checking out and then checking back in then I would recommend taking a break between the last MCQ testlet and the SIMS just to clear your brain and prep for those SIMS. But be careful, one time I had to take an exam at a different location, for scheduling reasons, and the lady working the check out/in didn't understand that the CPA clock keeps running during breaks. She made me re-do my signature 4 times to get it to match my license – HUGE waste of time!

If your test is 4 plus hours, I highly suggest taking a break between 3rd testlet and before SIMS. Like others have said, it allows you to clear your mind after 3 rounds of MCQ and to stretch out to get your bloods flowing. The whole process of checking in and out takes no more than 5-10 mins. If you think 5-10 mins really makes a difference on your guessing game, chances are you don't know the material anyway.

It seems like most of the posters have taken exams at larger centers. If you're fortunate enough to test at a center that is small (< 10 slots available at a time for me), checking in and out takes less than 5 minutes. Sure every minute counts, but I tried to replicate my study habits during the test. I'd hit 30 MCQ's, review them, then break for a few minutes. It gave my mind a few minutes to regenerate a bit…just trying to stay fresh!
