    Could someone explain why when determining ROI sometimes ‘total assets' is used as the denominator and other times ‘avg. total assets' is used? It seems to be the same case with a few other ratios as well.

    @aspiring1accountant you know I initially started typing an answer to your question but then i realized that I'm not quite sure. but what I can say is go back and make sure you are not missing anything some small detail that explains the variation. I briefly skimmed through my notes and I think I can explain but I want to do more research so that I am 100% sure before i go giving false information. I think I noticed only a couple instances where avg total assets is used as the denominator or numerator for Financial Leverage Ratio. I do know that I am going to make sure I know those formulas by heart if push comes to shove.

    So these are the types of questions that I hate. Its from Operations Managment which has a weight of 12-16%. Anyone good at questions like below?:

    Fernwell wants to buy shares of Gurst Company in two years. Fernwell uses a constant growth dividend discount model with a presumed dividend growth rate of 5%. If Fernwell's discount rate is 10% and Gurst's current year dividend is $20, what is the approximate price Fernwell will pay?

    a.

    $463

    b.

    $420

    c.

    $441

    d.

    $400

    Explanation

    Choice “a” is correct. Fernwell will pay approximately $463, computed as follows:

    Step #1, Compute dividend in subsequent year:

    Pt = D(t + 1) / (R − G)

    D(t + 1) = $20 × (1.05)2

    D(t + 1) = $20 × 1.1025

    D(t + 1) = $22.05

    Step #2, Apply growth rate to computed dividend:

    Pt = D(t + 1) / (R − G)

    Pt = ($22.05 × 1.05) / (0.10 − 0.05)

    Pt = $23.15 / 0.05

    Pt = $463

    Terms are defined as:

    Pt = Current price (price at period “t”)

    D(t+1) = Dividend one year after period “t”

    R = Required return

    G = Growth rate

    The tricky part is that you have to compute dividends 2 years ahead. So you are given the div. today ( D zero) as $20. To get div. for next year (D one) you take D zero x (1+ growth rate)…. $20x(1+.05) but you want Div. 2 years from now so you square it. $20x(1+.05)2 which is 22.05. Then you take 22.05x(1+.05)= 23.15. To solve for today's price you take 23.15/.05=463. The .05 is discount rate of 10%- growth rate of 5%.

    @futureninja wow dude thats insane!! A freakin 74. The good part about is you are almost there. Now what you have to do now is act like you scored a 50 because a lot of people lighten up on their studies because they think won the game with time still on the clock and they end up losing. Keep your foot on the gas with aggression and I promise that you will pass next time! If you study at least 2 to 3 hours everyday and retake the first week of April you will be golden.
