Grandfathered into CGMA

I was wondering of anyone knew the answer to this.

Do we have to continue to renew the CGMA indefinitely in order to not have to sit for the exam in the future? In other words, if I let the CGMA I currently have expire, will I have to renew to sit for the exam in order to activate it again or would I be grandfathered in since I was a CGMA in the past?

Thank you for your feed back.

I called the AICPA about this, and they said a member would have to renew the CGMA every year. If it would not be renewed, the member would have to take the test to receive the CGMA credential again.

Here's the question: do you *want* to hold yourself out as a CGMA if you haven't taken the test?

The president and CEO of the AICPA doesn't seem to have an issue with it, I don't know why anyone else would have an ethical dilemma with it.

Qualifying standards changes all the time, and you didn't take no exam… you took the CPA exam which acts as a benchmark of quality and have the qualifying experience.

Fair enough Jeff, it's a good point… It's not the field I currently work in anyway. However, it would of been nice if I did venture into it in the future, for me to not to have to sit for another exam. Hence, my reasoning for the question was me not wanting to pay the AICPA hundreds of dollars a year in membership and designation costs to maintain a useless designation. The option to just reactivate it without hassle would of been nice.

It's not a question of ethics – just personal preference.

I'm a CGMA, technically – but I won't hold myself out as one until I take the exam – assuming I can.

As long as you meet the experience requirements, which you must certify that you do when applying for the CGMA (before the exam gets implemented on 1/1/15), why wouldn't you hold yourself out as a CGMA?

I emailed the AICPA and attached my resume, and they had a member of their CGMA team review and affirm that my experience met their requirements. Thus, I hold myself as a CGMA.

Not slamming you at all, and I understand that it is your personal preference, but you must have the experience which qualifies you – be proud of that!
