I was just curious if anyone had gotten their CGMA yet? It launched on the 31st of January. I am already starting to see people on Linkedin with it.

I've officially taken both parts of the CMA (awaiting scores) and I would also agree it was very applicable to every day accounting. I've also paid and received my CGMA, but I'm not sure it's going on the resume just yet. Another thing I realized is that AICPA boasts all sorts of other certifications like the CITP (certified information technology professional). I've looked through job listings for organizations wanting that type of credential and I've yet to find one. To me it seems like the CGMA will just be another useless certification that the AICPA offers that employers won't recognize (besides the CPA of course).

Yes, I am both a CPA and a CGMA. Doesn't hurt to have some extra letters behind your name.

Yep same here…my company even paid the initial fee so they must've seen some value in it (they are really cheap and my position has nothing to do with mgmt accounting). Cpas are grandfathered in initially to promote awareness, eventually it will have some major requirements. I'm waiting for my wall certificate 🙂

Lo and behold….Ports America posted a position for senior accountant…get this:

    Required: CPA

    Preferred CMA or CGMA

First-CGMA-really? I immediately won't consider this position nor will I take it seriously. First one I've come across.

Second-If I were a CMA/CGMA (mgt experience) why one earth would I be doing Sr. Accountant work? Requiring management certs for non-mgt positions? lolwot? I'd be looking for Manager/Controller positions or higher.

It seems they're making the CPA entry-level type and the CPA/CGMA a more “advanced” cert…

CMA and CGMA is not related to being a manager as far as I know.

Pretty sure you need management work experience before you're granted a certificate, no?

Managerial accounting experience, not management experience. I don't have any managment experience and have the CGMA. Managerial accounting experience refers to non-financial reporting accounting responsibilities, accounting used to make managerial decisions (not necessarily you making decisions though).

Unfortunately the CGMA is viewed as a joke in the accounting community. When the AICPA first announced it and the the pilot pathway of paying to get it, a lot of CPAs went ahead and paid the extra money just to get it to be not left behind. Additionally, the AICPA awarded hundreds of honorary CGMAs to industry executives in order to build up a base. Because of how easy it was to get, it became a joke. Additionally, there are a lot of CPAs who refused to get it because they viewed it as a way for AICPA to devalue the CPA, which in a way it did. Now many who had it aren't even renewing it and those who still have it don't advertise it as it has a bad reputation in the public accounting community and in industry.

Now that there is an exam required, new enrollment into the CGMA program is going to plummet and the AICPA is seeing first hand why the CMA has such low enrollment in the US. The CPA is viewed as the gold standard and a lot of people aren't going to spend anymore time studying to pass another test. With the drop in new enrollment and current CGMAs not renewing, it looks like the CGMA designation will slowly become another fringe certification offered by the AICPA like the CFF or CITP. The AICPA spent a lot of money advertising a building a base for the CGMA program, but they are going to have to spend twice as much to rebuild the reputation of it.

I think the AICPA should have left management accounting to the IMA. The ICMA (the testing body of the IMA) does a good job, in my opinion, of determining what knowledge and skills are needed by the modern management accountant. However, the IMA could do a better job of marketing the CMA designation. Just my thoughts.
