@The_britster I believe there are several online MSA's that are decent. You might want to check out the University of Illinois new online MSA program. U of I is one of the best schools in the country for accounting and it is a relatively affordable program. Link Here

If you're non traditional you'll want to look at how regimented the program is. If a program allows you to take the courses in any order you want that's a bad sign in my opinion.

The program at Illinois does look good. There are so many others.

I chose St. John's because I was almost through with the CPA when I started. I'd look for programs that allow you to specialize after you get some core classes out of the way. Their program has specialties in controllership, forensic accounting, AIS, taxation and something else I think.

Most programs are a rehash of stuff an accounting major has already taken… so unless you need a review due to being out of school longer than 5 years, I'd look for the “thicker” programs with more specialty offerings that you can take after getting the core stuff knocked out.

I was also a non-traditional student. My undergraduate degree was in electrical engineering. I left that job to raise my children. They are in college now, and I am taking a new path. I earned an associate's degree in accounting from my local community college and enrolled at Colorado State University-Global Campus. It was affordable and all on-line. I did enjoy a trip to Denver for graduation last June. Each class has the same format with discussion board assignments due on Thursdays and written assignments due on Sundays. I felt that the material covered was adequate to prepare me for the CPA exam. I'm using Wiley to study. There were a few topics in FAR that were new to me when I took the prep class, but it wasn't a big deal. I found the professors to be approachable and generally responsive. The caliber of students definitely improved as I moved to more advanced courses. Classes are 8 weeks long, and they will run a class for only 1 student, so there are no scheduling issues. Of course, you are stuck if you don't like a certain professor. Good luck!
