Wow. You shouldn't mention accounting and medicine in the same sentence. Most of the time, we're playing with numbers, not trying to save lives and cure cancer (I know, not all doctors do this, but you know what I mean). Second, this thread is about the CPA vs. the CMA. Between these two certifications, the CPA is the better and more widely recognized certification. And the CPA exams are harder. Fact. It can't hurt to have a CMA and it may be beneficial for your particular field, but most accountants go for the CPA first and add a CMA later. If one only has a CMA, it quickly narrows down what you can do, right?

I agree the CPA has more prestige and is more widely recognized. My point was that you can't simply say that an exam is easier because it has two parts instead of four. If the CPA was converted to two sections but all of the same material was tested, which version would be harder, two parts or four? I'd choose the 4 part exam any day – less material to retain for each test.

“CPA > CMA in terms of prestige.

Give it the neigborhood test…go ask your neighbor next time he is mowing the lawn and ask them if they know what a CPA is…”yeah…it's like an accountant” would be the average Joe response.

Then ask them about a CMA. “Never heard of that” will be Joe's response.”

If you tell your neighbor that you're an accountant, the average Joe response would be, “Oh! So you can do my taxes!”

So, basically, ignore Joe. He doesn't know any better. If you want a CMA instead of a CPA, then go for it. But yeah, more companies recognize a CPA more than a CMA even though both are hard to earn in the own way.

When you say: “CPA first time pass rate: 25%”, do you mean 25% of the candidates that write an exam pass it or 25% of the candidates pass on their first writing? And where can i find those numbers for this year?

    Thanks,

    BEC: 80
    REG: 75
    AUD: 57, 80
    FAR: 10/5/2013
