Update: CMA still over CGMA?

So I’ve been reading through this forum on the areas concerning the CMA and CGMA. I believe I understand what has historically been the issue with the CMA (IMA doing little to market it, test going from 4-2 sections as an issue with people) and the CGMA (no exam… until 2015 now? Will it even be considered legit after that). Has anything changed in the past year that alters things?

Personally, I left public and am the CFO in an education system, and feel that taking the CMA exams and learning the material better will only help my career/knowledge even if the Cert loses ground to the CGMA in the coming years. I just want to make sure I’m understanding everything people have been saying regarding the two before I definitely go with the CMA.

This is something I am interested in hearing more about. Why doesn't the IMA market their certificate more? Seems like they had the perfect niche and opportunity to do so. I'm hearing commercials about the wonders of the CGMA on the radio and there isn't evena test yet.

CMA is still the golden certification for employers. I have posted in the past about my disdain for the AICPA and the CGMA in the past few months. Does seem like the CMA has cruised on the fact that they don't have much competition, a weakness the CGMA is attacking.

Go ahead and search for CGMA on indeed.com and see how many results you get (only a handful of jobs). Then, try out CMA on indeed.com (hundreds of positions related to accounting/finance). It's a ghost town on CGMA. After all, don't we get all these letters so we stand out in a stack of resumes?

Thanks for the response Smith. I was leaning towards the CMA because I definitely feel like it has the name recognition and the fact that the CGMA was handed out without even an exam attached to it for so long.

If I saw CGMA on a resume, the first thing I would ask was when it was acquired. If it is before January 1st, 2015 I know that it was simply purchased. I'd probably throw away the resume at that point.

CMA is still the golden standard for managerial accounting, for now.

If you want to learn more about the CMA, they have an official thread with some very good input. M.O.D. seems to be a responsive leader to the group.

Unless your employer will pay for your CMA exams and yearly $240 membership/maintenance fee, I don't see the worth for CPAs. CPA will always be the gold standard in accounting and corporate finance. Maybe I could see some worth for someone who wants to go from industry accounting at hq to a manufacturing plant. I just got my CMA first because I didn't want to take the undergrad accounting courses. It certainly made BEC the easiest CPA exam for me, but I feel much more satisfied as a CPA, even though I will never work in public accounting.

Thanks for the response! I think I could definitely get them to cover the annual membership, probably not the exams though. It seems that the majority of the material is directly related to a CFO position, more so than the majority of the CPA material – did you find that? How would you compare your experience studying per section to the CPA?
