I am curious if anyone has ever worked part time as an accountant/CPA. I currently work full time and im tired of not having time to pursue activities outside of the office. I am okay with scaling back my lifestyle in order to have more time for myself. Is this a good idea?

It is possible.
I have not done it, but I know firms will work with this type of arrangement for good people.
(It's usually for new moms that want to be able to spend more time with their family, but I am sure other allowances could be made.)
Obviously you would produce less, so your pay would be adjusted accordingly, but I see no reason you couldn't switch to a part time role.

The best bang for the buck is to be self-employed, and work the hours you want to work, without having to give up a % to your boss, just cover your own overhead. You might not be to that phase in your life yet, but definitely should be a long term goal for you.

Full time (or full plus OT) during tax season, and part time the rest of the year would probably appeal to many tax practices.

I only have the capacity to do tax accounting, especially with public clients, part-time or on a contract basis during the busy seasons. The firms have seasonal roles. Check out talentexchange for pwc and gignow for ey. Marcum does it also. I've seen/gotten work searching the remote section on indeed for out of state firms looking for busy season coverage. Industry contract roles exist but its easier from my experience to get a firm contract since they have so much work. Robert Half and Vaco staffing agencies have placed me on some great assignments. Accountingfly sends a decent email with freelance/remote roles. The OT is great during these contracts but the hours can get intense during second busy season. Be sure to set those boundaries early regarding the hours.

Also the way my taxes worked out, it was better for me to get a W2 so going through an agency vs being self-employed is my preference. Some of my public firm clients have an option where you can use an agency they partner with. Just negotiate your rate so your gross is where you want it to be per hour after the agency fee is taken. Lastly, make sure you understand/ask how your OT is calculated. I've seen it calculated differently than the normal time and half for the hours you work for a specific week.
