If you are deemed non-rehirable at a previous job (non accounting related job at a large corp)-would this affect future employment opportunities in public accounting?

You are in the clear if everyone follows protocol. As long as they call the HR department you should be fine. You can always have a friend call and act like a potential employer. If they slip up you can give them a warning. They are afraid of the liability of disclosing information that can be misleading. What some of the above posters are concerned with is that managers may somehow be contacted and not follow protocol. Your major concern should be that any personal references from that job don't slip up and give information that may be harmful. Also many employers will be suspicious if your old manager is not on your reference list.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Yeah, it'll be hard to explain to my future employers why i quit and why haven't i listed them as a reference. long story short, i quit because i was very very unhappy working there. I don't know.. i broke down one day and left a resignation letter on my boss's desk and never went back. That was a few weeks ago and i've come to realize how cowardly i acted..

Berrygoose: Don't sweat it. We all do things coming up that we regret. The important thing is that you recognize it as a mistake and you make corrections for the future. With all that said I'd be lying if I said I hadn't walked out more than once for a variety of reasons. Some them were mistakes and some I'm still proud of.

Sometimes judgment in the heat of the moment is a little tricky but my latest philosophy is this: If things are that bad you really have nothing to lose by collecting yourself, walking into your bosses office and calmly discuss your issues in a very frank manor. They might not like what you have to say, will likely disagree, might even bicker and more than likely it won't actually change anything. But it at least then you can speak your mind, have the chance to give notice and even gather some references (from your boss, peers or even bosses peers, etc). Just something to think about in that half second before you make that call…
