I graduated with an MBA in 2010. I am planning to sit for exams soon. But I don’t have any experience. And I might need another 10-15 credit hours of school. I am turning 31 in 3 months.

I always wanted to get in taxes. But I will have to find a job in 2 years and get the necessary experience and school. So if I were lucky I might be a CPA by 35 .

But just passing the exam without experience and deficient education, I don’t think I will be able to get into the big 4 .

Also I am good in computer programming and if I wrote to train another 6mths I am sure I can get a job in computers in the next 1 year for at least 60k.

So I think about it , is being CPA at this age really worth it? After all I can do taxes being an Enrolled Agent with the IRS.

But I always wanted to be a CPA since college?

    Any suggestion..

Ok, i'll answer from another side, I work in the software world, surrounded by computer programmers. They make A LOT of money, way more than I ever will. At this point in my life, if people are in school and unsure what to do with their life, I point them in this order.

    1. Software

    2. Engineering

    3. Hardware

    4. Sales

    5. Accounting

Why did I end up in Accounting?!? … frankly no one told me, and for whatever reason I wanted to be a CPA. If you are skilled in tech, there is amazing money to be made and landing a decent job making $100k plus with 2 years of experience is not uncommon at all. The “problem” with tech is you have to be mobile, moving companies and moving up every 1-2 years, accounting is nice in that it is “safe” and “secure”, qualities that attract some people for whatever reason.

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

Here is an example of a non-traditional job posting that specifically calls for a CPA (masters/CPA combo preferred). This job pays upwards of 90k and more for the masters/CPA combo. This job has regular hours although I am sure it is a big, busy job with some OT. This is the type of job that I would like to have (currently working on MPA) in the future when my health is back to 100% and I am strong again. I like the work/life balance and benefits. This is what is worth it to me:

    Just sayin' =)
