I agree that it may not be a great idea. And like others said, you can never 100% rely on travel plans, because flights get delayed, snowpocolapses turn cities upside down, and cruises break down in the middle of oceans! So your cover would be blown if you said you had “an emergency” but your employer found it turned out to actually be “STUCK at sea”!

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

I had a broken foot and wanted to take a sick day to get an X-ray and crutches and HR responded by asking if I was sure I needed to take a WHOLE day off for that, letting me know that they really would discourage it during busy season. I almost responded, “Are you kidding me?! I can't even F-ing walk.” Instead… I worked from home.

And I work at a relatively low-key firm.

So yeah… Your firm will probably care if you go on a cruise during busy season with three day's notice.

I actually LOLed reading this! NO, it’s not cool to take off 5 days for a cruise when it’s tax season. If you decide to go, make sure you’ve cleaned out your desk because your job won’t be waiting for you when you come back. My firm won’t approve paid time off requests from mid January to April 15th for any reason unless something major happens like you get hit by a bus, have a heart attack, or die. I actually told one of our admin employees yesterday that if they wanted to leave early to go to the dentist next week for a cleaning, they can take it unpaid or make up the time because I won’t sign off on the PTO request. If they were having a root canal or something, it would be different. For something routine, they can make a late appointment or do it in December or late April like the rest of us do! I have a zero tolerance policy for BS during tax season. When you work on the tax side, you must accept the reality that your life shuts down between January and April. If you don’t like it, get out of the business. Taking 5 days off during tax season falls under my criteria of BS. It’s a good thing you don’t work for me!!! 😉

I don't make the rules, davem. It's my job to enforce them! I don't think coming in early or staying late is a big deal. They have an hour for lunch so they could choose to have a quick bite instead of a long lunch. We all make choices and everyone knows the policies. If you start bending the rules for some, then you can't expect everyone to play by them.

I am curious if everyone's advice would be the same if it was a family funeral. If so, its sad that public accounting has turned into a profession without a soul. I think it is sad that tax accountants aren't allowed to have things come up in their lives(not talking about cruises).

All those long hours people are working is allowing tax partners to make 250k a year while many tax accountants average under $20 an hour during busy season. It's really is a scam conspired on a national level(capitalism at its worst). The public accounting industry could be a different animal if everyone just took on a reasonable amount of clients.

My answer would be different if he worked there full-time, but he is an intern/college student. I doubt he is relied on much. I think if he really likes the firm he should not go, however since he posted this I am assuming there is already a lack of commitment.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I would not go on the Cruise. You can always go on a cruise trip later in life. Just now you need to focus on building your career.

The only times I believe staff should be allowed to take time off during a busy season is if there is a family emergency IE parents or close relatives are in the hospital/critical illness or if you have a critical illness.

It is different if you have to go to a funeral. Although, I do think you'd raise some eyebrows if you said you needed a week off to go to a funeral – unless it was in some other country.

And I don't know about asking for PTO for the dentist. If I'm working 60 hours a week, it doesn't make a difference if I do the work at noon on a Sunday instead of at 4pm on a Friday.

I don't know what was up with my HR lady back when I heard that from her – since then, countless people have taken sick days because their kids were sick or whatever. Life goes on. No tax emergencies happen just because someone is out for a day or two. I actually once had a partner who went to a funeral on April 13-14. People made do. Returns got finished or went on extension.

Still – I've never worked anywhere that would be fine for me to go on vacation with only three day's notice! That's not a public accounting thing – it didn't fly when I was cashier at a grocery store or when I worked at a university, or anywhere else.
