ParticipantI'm starting a new supervisor job soon. I've worked in audit past 6-7 years and a background in fraud prevention. Took governmental accounting courses in grad school and passed the CPA exam, but this will be my first job using governmental accounting. Any suggestions for areas to refresh to be prepared first few months?

ParticipantDon’t worry – they will have work papers from prior periods you can look at. It is not that different. If they issue a CAFR read through it. You can find an old textbook if you need one but they will answer your questions and I doubt you will be doing anything that hasn’t been done recently. Listen and take notes when you do ask. Good luck!🍀 i am always happy to hear folks have chosen govt.

ParticipantThanks for the reply. It's a regional campus for a large state university. So, I suspect they will have pretty good systems in place that have in place a while. I have my old textbook and will skim through that to refresh fund accounting, and signed up for a self-study CPE course for Gov. Accounting to get some hrs for next year.

ParticipantThose are great ideas. Most states have a govt finance certification program – check for yours if you get in there and like it. NC does theirs through the UNC-CH School of Government. Your employer may require and/or pay for some courses. Good luck!🍀 Sounds like a great job.
