If not, how might I go about making it exist, because this is what I want to be doing in 3-5 years. Begin rant that i’ve been asking some friends/mentors:
This fall will mark 3 years at a job I LOVE, but frankly isn’t what I want to do the rest of my life, nor does it pay as well as one would hope. That being said it is setting me up to be a very specialized and knowledgeable person in the realm of citrus agriculture, and by nature of our company I have lots of IT knowledge. We do the ERP system for Sunkist Packinghouses, making sure you get your oranges and lemons on time!
What I really want to do is to be a salesman of sorts. There is potential for me to be able to do sales at work, but we have a limited client base, and very little room for real growth, so this leaves quite a predicament. I could see myself doing work for a public firm in a roll like this, but since I have 0 experience at public, I’m curious what my path may look like. Since i’m still young (26) all my friends are still doing the grind to senior experienced staff, so no one has any real weight to pull for me, nor do we in Spokane have any firms that would even have a position like this.
I know for a fact my IT skills are coveted in any arena, but there is a good chance that the knowledge of the Ag world (central California) should be a real double bonus, I’m just curious if you have any advice on how to move forward over the next 3-5 years. I’m not anxious to jump ship any time soon, but I just want to “manage” my career and have future goals rather than bounce around like a ping pong ball. I also don’t particularly want to work my way up the ladder by doing 100 hour tax weeks on my way…not worth it with a family.
