ajurew1ParticipantI was told by a recruiter that passing the CPA exam won’t help me find a job, and employers will not take it into consideration since I don’t have the kind of experience they are looking for.
I have been working as a lease/recovery accountant since I graduated college. I read tenant leases and bill the tenants based on the terms of their leases. I have been unable to get interviews for Staff Accounting type jobs. Do I have any way out of this position and into something that offers more career growth?

I'm kind of worried that I will have a hard time finding a job after my CPA. I left my job as an assistant manager in a retail enviornment to study for the CPA full-time. I have no recent accounting experience. I am assuming that many private accounting hiring managers will either consider me overqualified due to the CPA or under-qualified due to my experience. Ironically I would prefer a basic staff accountant job over a really challenging staff accountant job, so I can ease my way back into the industry. At this point in my life my ambitions are limited to a steady job and a slow climb to the middle.
My biggest concern is getting a job that is to difficult for me to handle and end up unemployed again. I am actually less afraid of going into public accounting again, because they are used to working with people with little experience. I am seriously considering pursuing a masters in taxation and becoming a tax accountant in January 2015. The barriers of entry appear to be less, assuming i get my CPA, and the job security and salary should be great. I just hope I can stomach a life dedicated to tax.
I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:
"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

ajurew1ParticipantThe really sad thing is even my employer doesn't care. I would gladly accept a property accounting position here but they only want people with experience.

AnonymousInactiveI would gear your resume to the job description. If you are applying for a job that doesn't require or mention a CPA then leave it off your resume. You can bring it up in an interview if it gets to the point of discussing future advancement, but as someone that has hired staff accountants I would be looking for someone that wants to be in the job for a while to learn as much as they can about the business and the accounting for the business, not someone that just wants a foot in the door somewhere and wants to move up rapidly. I think that's the biggest difference between public accounting and corporate accounting. Public wants movers and shakers and corporate usually wants people that are going to stick around for a while in one position.

masa_innParticipantHe is in Atlanta area. Used a reputable agency to get this job. However, he had a lot of corporate experience prior to getting his current position.

stolewayParticipantYoure smart, look at your scores. Finding a job is not easy but you will definitely get one with time. Accounting is not a big deal (judging from the fact that most accountants in industry specialise in a specific area and do that same thing throughout their career) , but most hiring managers and recruiters are trying very hard to monopolise the profession.
Just hang in there, good thing you have a job that takes care of the bills.

Study MonkMemberIt appears that people don't want to train people these days. Maybe there are just sh*t loads of qualified accountants unemployed these days. I don't see to many re-posts of jobs on craigslist, so someone is getting these jobs.

ajurew1ParticipantMy cousin has his CDL and drives a snow plow and street sweeper for the city. He makes 35/hr plus overtime. I guess having CDL is more valuable. I picked the wrong career.

san4596MemberI see Public Accounting wanting worker bees, and Corp Accounting wanting long term employees. In Corp, you can move up fairly quickly depending on the company, but they want people that are going to make a life with them.
