CPA exam doesn't matter? - Page 2

I was told by a recruiter that passing the CPA exam won’t help me find a job, and employers will not take it into consideration since I don’t have the kind of experience they are looking for.

I have been working as a lease/recovery accountant since I graduated college. I read tenant leases and bill the tenants based on the terms of their leases. I have been unable to get interviews for Staff Accounting type jobs. Do I have any way out of this position and into something that offers more career growth?

From what I found, Illinois is very liberal when it comes to “experience”. I've been working there 5 years, so I think I have the experience part covered.

It seems like recruiters can't think creatively. In my experience, they only want people who have work history that exactly matches the job requirements. The only calls I get from recruiters are for positions that are the exact same or very similar to what I do now (either lease audit or recovery billing). It's almost impossible it seems to get someone to understand that I am capable of being taught something new. My own company doesn't even have interest in moving me into a different position.

They are ignorant. I've had mixed success with employment agencies like Randstad, Accountemps. Some are big, lazy, entitled. Others will hustle and see that you have potential. Keep looking. Get on Linkedin. Network. Stalk recruiters and let them know you stalk them lol

Did you ask the recruiter how long they had been a crack addict? I would have.

I should have. It just seemed like a very disrespectful and rude thing to say.

Oh, and then he asked me if I knew anyone looking for a job that I could refer to him. Um, no.

I would stay far away from that headhunter. I've had mixed success too. Some are reputable, some aren't. I think your ability to analyze contracts (leases) would be useful to positions at large corporations where accountants are involved in reading contracts for divestitures and/or acquisitions (or any other contracts involving transactions). Find ways to make it a positive and capture those abilities on your resume. Maybe take a look at what your resume really says and if you're gearing your resume to those types of jobs. I work at a large corp and we have staff that have CPAs,
