I’ve been working in public accounting for 2 years now, I just recently passed the exam (it was a really long road) and I still don’t understand why people stay in it busy season after busy season. In order to find out I started interviewing the most passionate people at my firm to see what really makes them tick. Give a listen to my first interview with a Partner at my firm. If its informative great, entertaining even better, boring as anything, well than finish your cpa exam using this great forum as guidance and reconsider your options when your finished.

Not even remotely, not sure how others are.

I think the industry is overdue for heavy disruption from automation/tech, will be interesting to see how this field looks 10 years from now.

For me, accounting is only the first step towards understanding business processes, and if you want to work in the field of finance and have a flexible schedule, accounting is the best profession for this + you can make a lot.

Of course. It's the only profession that I know most of the industry terms. Someone can ask me to do their books, prepare taxes (mostly Canadian taxes) and at the same time, I'm able to explain to the clients what they are. Also, as mentioned above, it pays the bills, and you gain trust from business people, such as banks and other creditors; it's a great profession for life.

I'm not an accountant, but I really like accounting. I have a lot of fun discussing accounting standards and really get into why things should be one way or another.

No. But it made the most sense to go into. Like you, I recently passed the exam and working In public accounting for the first time can be tremendously difficult. I like accounting and I’m happy I chose to work in it, but “passionate” is a bit of an overreach. Yes, I looked at the definition of Passionate before posting this.
