Hi all! I currently live in Wisconsin and am considering moving to Minneapolis. I’m 27, single and am looking for something different. I’m between moving to the Madison/Mke area or Minneapolis. I know the job market is crazy over there, but Minneapolis is rather expensive. I’m curious how you like it and if you feel you’re able to live a good life over there? Any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

I live in the area! What area are you thinking about in Minneapolis? If you live in the downtown or Uptown area, it does get expensive (over 1K a month). I like living here; there's great public transportation, lots of trails and parks for hikng and outdoor activities, etc. There's a lot of diversity here. You'll find quite a couple of F500 companies in the area. There's a lot of good food options in Minneapolis, as well.

Like any large city, there's a lot of congestion. If you drive, traffic can be pretty soul crushing during work hours, Friday nights, etc. I think if you live outside of downtown or in cities around Minneapolis (Maybe try Roseville, Falcon Heights..), you'll be fine in terms of living comfortably. Rent is more reasonable.

Do you like to live around the younger crowd and single people? If so, you would like downtown. I find if you live in the suburbs, you tend to see more families and people who are much further into their careers.

@Grape Thanks for the reply! I’ll be working in Bloomington (non big 4 firm) and where I’ll live is still up in the air. I’m 26, single and like to have fun, so I was thinking somewhere near uptown or downtown. Some people in the Minneapolis office recommended St. Louis Park though. Thoughts?

As far as salary I’m guessing I’ll be low $60s. I ran a budget and contributing 20% to retirement and my other recurring expenses I think it should be ‘tight’ but not horrible. I have an expensive car payment, but it’s at 0% so it doesn’t make sense to pay off.

I highly recommend Uptown. I lived there last summer, found roommates online, and paid $600 a month to live 1 block from Lake Calhoun and 4 from Stella's. If you want to live in Uptown, you can – just gotta look hard enough.

I have lived all over the Twin Cities. Multiple parts of St. Paul, Uptown from 2014-2017, currently in St. Louis Park, and am moving to Northeast Minneapolis at the end of the month. You can't beat Uptown but it's getting very crowded. Northeast is an upcoming area. St. Louis Park is cool depending on where you're at – I am near the West End and it's kind of booshie. Chain restaurants and not much character compared to Uptown/Downtown/Northeast but to each's own. Find someone looking for a roommate if you want to keep cost down otherwise you're going to overpay for a one bedroom apartment – even outside of Minneapolis.
