I have just recently started at a Big Four, in which I was very hestiate to work there. I knew it wasn’t for me but I took the offer anyway due to the resume recognition. However, I am regretting my decision a few months in and feel I would be better off in private doing somehing that I enjoy. I am struggling in devising a exit strategy since I want to leave in a few months rather than sticking it out. Also, I am not sure how to approach my early absence to prospective employers as well.

@neika822 I would really like some advice on how to get an accounting job in a nice college/university setting. I just started with a Big 4 and 5 weeks in I AM DESPERATE. I absolutely hate the work. But I also desperately need the money. I'm about to be clinically depressed if I don't do sth about it quick. I am ok with making a few thousand less if I can get a desk job which runs 9 to 5 instead of this current 8 to ‘however long is needed' for the 51k a year. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I read all the posts, but I'm left clueless. The reason why I'm taking the CPA exam is so that I can get into Big 4. I'm not planning to submit my resume to any of the Big 4 (or any CPA firms for that matter) until I can put down that I passed 1 section on the cpa exam. My reason to work for Big 4? To build up experience and put it into my resume. I want to become an auditor. Now I read all these comments saying that the people that are in there wants to get out, while I'm someone who wants to get in? I fill this rather funny.

On another note, 9 to 5 pm, 5 times a week. That's what? 40 hours. Isn't that normal? I welcome 60 hours as long as it's something that keeps me busy. Rather than me gaming all day and having someone bug the **** out of me. The reason that I can think of is that people have family and personal things to do, and they rather put more time into that instead into the their work. Is that what is depressing/inflicting misery upon you guys?

Even reading through all those comments, I'm still not convinced that public accounting isn't for me. I guess the saying “I go where the money goes” doesn't apply to everyone…

    FAR - 62 (10/2/13), 50 (5/30/14)
    AUD - 73 (10/30/13), 66 (5/6/14)
    REG - 69 (4/8/14)
    BEC - 66 (2/27/13), 73 (4/21/14)

I'd find a job before quitting. And I'd try to stay for a year or 2. I agree the experience you get is priceless and having that on your resume is going to help you in your career. Promise!

I remember being in public accounting and hating it. Now I look back and wished I would have made my career more of a priority in my 20's. I guess the problem is when do you dial it back? Right now I have great work/life balance, but my pay is pretty pathetic IMO for 8 years of experience.

Only you can make this decision, but PLEASE don't quit without a job lined up. I've seen too many people do that and be out of work for months and not by choice.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
