Why can't I pass FAR & REG?! Help for 4Q rematch please.

In 4Q I will rematch w/ FAR & REG. If I don’t pass both, AUD credit expires 11/23. Like most, I want to be done with this exam once and for all! I’m fortunate to be very accomplished so far in the acct’g field at a large corp (not bragging, adding for context) and well outpace many peers who are CPAs and/or have 2x my experience, so I don’t understand why I can’t seem to pass these. I know I’m fully capable to pass, but I just keep getting fail after fail and its embarrassing.. not to mention expensive. :/

My goal is to study 5 wks for each. Embarrassingly, this is my 4th shot at both FAR & REG. I’m using Ninja MCQ, Notes, Book, Audio, & Flashcards. (already have Notes/Book/Audio/Flashcards and will need to repurchase MCQ) I average ~50 hrs/wk at work plus a 1.5 hr RT commute.

Can anyone please help with an updated study strategy for me to knock these 2 out of the park in 4Q? Any other study materials that I should consider?

    Thank you in advance!!

What is your study strategy now?

My goal is to get through all NINJA MCQ and trend at least 85%. I usually study section by section and do so about 3 hours per day on the week days, and 6 hours a day on the weekends.

At work/gym I'll be using the flashcards and audio, and audio for my commute as well.

I think the problem I've run into in the past is the MCQ take way longer than planned and I don't feel like i'm making as much progress as I'd like.

Do you incorporate the book/notes into your studying and taking notes? I find that doing MCQ only leads to memorizing the answers without really knowing the concepts….

I also have the FAR book but didn't know if I should focus on that section by section, then do MCQ, or read the full book, then do all MCQ… etc.

FAR is terrible, I just started studying for it a couple of weeks ago and it's the worst. But here is my approach I have used for all 3 parts so far (REG score is pending) and it worked at least twice…. I first listen to lectures (each section, however it's outlined in my materials)-some stuff sticks but then I go through and read the relevant section of the book and then I do MCQ and related SIMS. I am using Becker as my primary study tool with Ninja during final review. Sometimes I will jump into MCQ after listening to lecture but inevitably find myself going back to the book, taking notes, and making flashcards, then going through MCQ again and then it works much better. To me, you have to read the book to cement the knowledge, otherwise you just know what's covered in MCQ, which doesn't necessarily focus on the minutia of the material which is what can trip you up during the exam. I hope that's helpful.

I don't what scores you had before or how close you were.

I also don't know how many how focused you are in the hours you put it, you're putting in a good few work hours.

I can tell you what I've done to pass the three working on four (reg). Ninja Flashcards seem cool though I don't really spend much time with them.

I skip the lectures/ reading the book, especially after studying through once and failing I find it to be a waste of time. If there is one subject I just can't seem to understand I might look at a video otherwise nah.

I mostly just to MCQs, not section but overall (will only do individual sections if I am really struggling with one area I want to hammer one troubled area home.

I always make sure to understand why I get an mcq question right or wrong (each and every time). If I find something particularly troubling or confusing I will make a note on it but otherwise I don't use notes.

I start out with ninja and do the mcqs. When in another week or two I will move back to my glem mcq's.

The key for me is always to understand why I get each question right or wrong, everything has a reason for being right or wrong.

Also though this won't apply to you right now, I focused on the hardest exams for me and worked on them one at a time.

Skiping lectures/reading might be why you have failed so many exams..

Being as the only parts that I had to take twice, the bigger picture advice I can give is: Quality over quantity.

For my 1st FAR take, journal entries was my weakness. I made sure that I fully understood what a debit/credit was before I even started the first chapter. It would definitely help to fully conquer Gov't and NFP. You must know them in and out. I can even remember how much it was littered throughout my exam, twice. Also, don't forget the basics, like depreciation, PP&E, impairment, the such.

For REG, it is very difficult to remember so many rules and whatnot. I had to take REG twice since I freeballed the first attempt (didn't want it to go to waste and wanted to have a taste of it). I actually rewrote my notes, at least twice for each tax entity/individual in order to memorize it. And I still BARELY passed.

Now, what may work for me, may not work for you. I did lectures and copied notes thoroughly. Try and understand this chapter before you move on. I always did questions after every chapter (DON'T focus on the score for now). As the chapters kept growing, I kept adding more questions cumulatively to the bunch. When I start noticing a trend in where my weaknesses are, I would go back to that particular chapter and review/reread/restudy and see where I went wrong the first time.

When you officially finish ALL the chapters and you've refined most of the weak points, now is the time do all cumulative. Back then when SIMs were only 40%, I saved them near the end. But now I suggest doing SIMs every day, though the theory goes, if you understand the concepts very well, SIMs shouldn't come as a surprise. Also, when you do MCQs, when you get it wrong, WRITE that SHIT down. You getting it wrong once is okay, getting it wrong twice is not acceptable. When you go through each MCQs, get to the level where you can justify the other three as wrong with explanation. If you take an hour for 10 MCQs, who cares? As long as you completely understand that concept and all the information within those 10 mcqs, you should be good for that area.

You can do a 1000 mcqs and memorize them all. The point is to understand WHY this answer is the best choice. Also, if you have money, which it seems like you do (accomplished in your field and all), consider getting the gleim test bank for REG and FAR. I only suggest that since if you've taken this 3 times, and only used NINJA, you're probably already remembering the answers and tricks in each question. It'd be worth it to buy another test bank.

@Hasy, thanks for the advice. I'm in no means rolling on my bedroom floor in dollar bills (more like nickels and pennies 😆), But I am at the point where anything is better than burning $200 per exam every time I fail one. Not to mention renewing test banks etc.

Have you used Gleim? Or do you recommend Roger?

@CPAcandidate3 All my fails in FAR and AUD were when I was spending more of my time on sims/reading the book/lectures ect. I found that when I focused on understanding the MCQs similar to what hazy did brought my scores went up significantly.

My only recent fail was in REG. I only had five or six weeks and was taking four graduate level accounting courses from my accounting program at the same time. I had also been going essentially nonstop since November.
