What to do if your CPA test is cancelled due to weather- solution (long)

So I’m making this post because I couldn’t find anything that helped when I was going through this so I hope this helps someone in the future.

I was set to take reg on 3/7/18 (wed) in NY area and of course it was snowed out. I arrived at the center and there was just a note saying prometric was closed on the door, they didn’t notify anyone by phone/email. People kept showing up with there NTS and then wondering what to do (weather wasn’t that bad at that point). The note said they would help reschedule tests in the nest week or so, the only problem of course is the Q1 window was about to close and many people (including me) really needed to get the test in this window. No one really knew what to do so we all just went home thing we were probably going to have to take the test Q2 (to make matters worse my nts was also expiring so that would mean more hoops to jump through). I called prometric customer service (waited on hold for a while) and they said nothing was open in NY area and my nts I would have to get extended by calling nasba. I then called nasba (waited on hold for even longer) and the lady just said email candidate care and they’ll get back to you eventually. No one I called seemed to understand or care that I really needed to take this test by the end of the window so I gave up for the rest of the day because the weather was bad and I figured hopefully tomorrow I can figure something out. The next morning I called prometric customer service again (waited on hold for a while) and asked them to find me any test center with an opening I can drive to. Apparently they must schedule 24 hours before the test so I asked for anything withing driving distance. The guy asked if I was sure and said there was an opening in Allentown PA the next day, about a 2+ hour drive from me in NY. I insisted I want it scheduled because I have to take this test this window. I would leave extra early or stay by a friend or something, but I would figure it out. So the guy schedules it for me, and I receive the email confirmation. Later that day I try calling the Allentown office and I wasn’t getting through to anyone. I wanted to explain to them my situation and I didn’t want to drive all the way out there and find they were closed ( the website didn’t say anything). So I called customer service again asking what was up. They said that office was closed today but that drive was pretty far and the nice lady asked if I would like her to try and find something closer. I said sure but the guy this morning tried and nothing was open. Well she tried again and miraculously a spot opened up in Queens or Friday at noon right near me. I couldn’t believe it, she quickly scheduled it for me (had to get permission from her boss or something to reschedule me a second time) and I kept checking the confirmation in disbelief. The next day I took my test without a hitch (the test center didn’t have a card ready for me to write out my code, but when I explained I scheduled it yesterday they said that makes sense and it wasn’t a problem). Just found out today I got a 79 and probably would not have done as well if I was driving all the way to Allentown PA to take it.

To make a long story short, it is possible to have your test cancelled by the end of a quarter (7th or 8th) and still find a way to take it that quarter. You just have to be persistent with prometric customer service, keep calling and waiting on hold to find out if a someone cancelled last minute and a spot opened up, or be willing to drive to 2+ hours or so. You have to call them because they can see open spots even though on the website the whole calendar is grayed out. Of course a little bit of luck also helps. I really hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else but if it does this should hopefully help.

Congrats Nate. Glad it worked out for you.

    I had a similar experience in Q4 2017.

Had my test scheduled for 12/9. Testing center closed prematurely due to weather. (Less than one inch fell).

Called up prometric first thing the next morning (12/9). I explained to them the situation. I needed to sit before the end of the testing window 12/10 by any means necessary. Willing to fly as well.

They offered me a spot in Birmingham, Alabama for 12/10 at either 8 AM or 12:30pm. I reside in NJ…

I was going secure that spot and deal with it but decided to ask them to check again while on the phone and a spot in Delaware opened up which is a 2.5 hour drive.

Ended up taking that spot and left at 5 am to get to the testing center before my 8am appointment.

In the end prometric accommodated me but I did not pass FAR that attempt unfortunately. I had given up on reviewing due to the unnecessary closing and thought I would not have a spot to test. Oh well.

I buckled down and passed this most recent testing window and now passed all sections.

If you are in a state with adverse weather I would recommend scheduling a couple of days prior to the end of the testing window to allow yourself some additional time to reschedule if your testing center closes due to weather.

Heads up that you can check for site closings on https://www.prometric.com/en-us/pages/siteclosure.aspx. I also had my exam scheduled for March 7 but the day before my exam I kept monitoring the closure listing. As soon as I saw that the test center was closed, I called customer care and was thank god able to reschedule for the next day. (Of course I first panicked that I would have to wait to take it in April and wouldn't get my score till late June…)

This Happen to me. My Test was scheduled the day before the last day in the testing window. They clos all prometic centers in my area. I contacted the state board and they stated they don't revise dates for this type of matter. Long story short I had to wait until the next testing window to complete the exam. I believe only if your exam is going to expire they will intervene. Hope this helps.
