What is your reason for embarking on the CPA? What is the goal in passing the exams? I am sometimes demotivated and I sometimes have trouble understanding why am I putting myself through this. So, what is your WHY?

    Welp…

I simply had no direction in my early to mid 20s. After receiving an undergraduate degree in accounting, I made a boneheaded move of working in retail (which pays quite well for a recent grad at that time). About three years in, I realized that I have to put that piece of paper to use. So I decided to get back into accounting.

My thought process was that I was going to be a music producer by any means. But then reality sunk in. I have to have a career that is more secure, especially with a new fiancee at the time. So where do I begin? Apply feverishly for jobs and snatch up the first one that I get an offer for? Or build up my education and certifications to improve my brand? I went with the latter.

My employer paid for about 80% of my Masters program. Now I am hunting the CPA exams to show employers that not only am I worth more, but that I am also looking to move ahead fast in the industry. The end goal is to become an internal auditor. I don't know why, but the thought of having little “GOTCHA!” moments at work seems satisfying. Correct me if I am wrong to think that's how internal audit is haha.

    REG - 80 (6/10/16)
    BEC - 79 (7/19/16)

I am doing it because I am too far into Accounting and too old to start a new career.

I feel I am closer to becoming a CPAlcoholic though.

So I don't have to be an accountant. Gives me a credential to get out.

I was finishing my Masters in accounting and had never considered the CPA. Whenever I told someone I was in grad school for accounting they would ask “does that mean when you graduate you'll be a CPA?”

Got tired of trying to explain, just started answering “yes” and had to make good on my bluff.

Plus I have nerdy obsession with accounting. Its fun to learn some of those really challenging subjects and the intricacies of FAR and BEC.

    FAR - 86
    AUD - 93
    REG - 8/31/16
    BEC -84

My why is because I did not go to a highly selective undergrad or grad program and I think the CPA may increase my marketability. I've had steady work and decent opportunities, but I think being a CPA may help me find that one opportunity that gets me to the next level in my career.
