So I have decided that I would like to have a career in Tax over Audit, but I am unsure of which department I should go in. I am aware of SALT and Federal Tax.

Could someone list the various groups and if there are any preferences that people tend to have in over the other?

    AUD - 82
    REG - 78
    BEC - 78
    FAR - 76

Generally my understanding is that the exit opportunities are a lot lower in SALT than federal tax, as there's fewer jobs in it (fewer companies have people on staff for SALT than people on staff for federal tax, from what I can tell, and if you want to leave tax it's harder to sell SALT as applying to non-tax roles). It seems like of the various tax fields, federal tax is the most generic, which can be good or bad (won't make you as special, but will also make more doors open).

When I received my offer, I was given a choice between FED and SALT. I chose FED, because you will still work on state and local returns. If you go SALT, you will have limited FED exposure. Starting your career, it's typically better to start in a broad area (FED), then narrow your focus as you progress.

I did a year of FED, then moved into Cost Seg (I have previous experience in construction & architecture). Now that I'm in Cost Seg, I've also been doing some work in FED, Research & Development, and Transfer Pricing.

Get the broad experience, then become an “expert” in specialized areas. Specialization, while having broad general knowledge, can help you advance up the ladder quicker.

    BEC 75
    REG 81
    FAR 69, 75
    AUD 71, 74, 84
