Weird situation

I was referred by an employee of a CPA firm which is the best local firm in town. I went for the interview on Monday 2 weeks ago and got a right-on-spot offer which does not happen often as they said. On Friday of the same week, I found out that due to visa issue, I cannot work after September 30. I probably should not have told them but I did not feel right if I don’t so I emailed the HR manager to set up a meeting to talk about it. She called me right back and ask what the problem is. I told her, she said she will talk with the managing partner and got back to me next Monday. Last Tuesday, she emailed me and said their schedule were busy and couldn’t meet me either on Mon or Tue and asked me for another time. I told her last Wed work. She said she would look at it and got back to me. I have never heard back from her since then. I emailed her last Wed and said if she could not see me, we could talk over phone. Still nothing. I’m at a really weird position right now. Because according to the interview, I will start working next week. But I’m not sure what I should do. Because I just found out that on the day I informed them, the HR manager told the employee who referred me that I DECLINED the offer!!! While actually I told her due to my visa issue, I can only work until Sep 30. But even it’s just short time, I still give my 100% at work. I’m very confused and disappointed to be honest. First of all, what she told the employee is not true. Secondly, she just disappeared without any communication. I don’t know what I should do now. Should I email them? I really want to work for them, but it will be difficult if they don’t want me anymore. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

I'm sorry for your situation and she should have gotten back to you. But in essence if you said you can only work for 6 months, you declined the offer 🙁 I know you would have been fabulous there but nobody wants to train an employee then have to start a new search within a few months.

@mla11692: I completly understand what you said that they don't want to hire me anymore. I expected it so if they could just told me, I'm happy to take it. However, I really disappointed that they did not talk with me even they said so. Or is it because they cannot withdraw my offer legally? Can it only be from me?

Of course it is legal to withdraw the offer (which at this point you're only assuming they've done. The person who referred you could easily be mistaken or embellishing a conversation.)

I mean I'm still eligible to work, and they officially offered me in writing. I don't think they can withdraw the offer now.

I assume you are in the US IzChi? Employment is at will, so basically you can quit, or you can be let go at any time. I once was offered a position in the same way. The person who hired me had no idea I needed a visa. as soon as that info was on the table, there was not offer. Smaller firms are less likely to sponsor employees through H1-B. Maybe try one of the big 4?

@Nessie: Oh, I see what mla11692 meant now, thank you! Yes, I'm in US. I'm sorry to hear your story. As I said, I just tried to understand why they could not tell me that they took back the offer. I meant it' really unprofessional.
