Can a Non New York CPA sign off for a NY State CPA candidate??

Can a CPA put the letters CPA after his name if he is working on a state that is not where he is licensed?? Example a MA CPA working in NY ??

My understanding is the CPA needs to be licensed in the state they are working/supervising you to sign off on the experience.
If you are working in MA, and your supervisor/boss is licensed in MA, then you should be golden.

Part 2, if you are licensed in NY and working in MA, I think you would need to indicate CPA-NY or something of that nature.
I know there is reciprocity to some degree, but if you are working in that state regularly or have an office in that state I think you need to register in that state.
    Not an expert.

If I have a non-NY tax audit I can just fall back on the EA which is valid in all 50 states (although most states want you to be a resident of their state to sign off on the POA as an EA).

I have the opposite. I am in NY and the CPA is licensed in MA.

from here I got the below.. what does it mean?? My take is you can be licensed in any state?? I have emailed the NYSED anyway

What work experience work requirements must I meet before applying for my CPA license?
An applicant meeting the 150 semester hour education requirement must have at least one-year of full time, or the part-time equivalent) providing accounting services or advice involving skills in accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting services under the supervision of a licensed CPA in a U.S. jurisdiction or a public accountant in New York State.

Read the “NYS time to process thread”, there was a similar scenario in there.
From what I recall the supervising CPA must be licensed in the state they are supervising the employee.
If your supervisor is licensed in MA, then I strongly advise that your place of employment is also in MA, if possible.

Also, always refer directly to NYS source documents when possible.
NYS CPA Form 1 and Form 4B and related instructions are your bible.
All forms and instructions can be found here.
    https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpaforms.htm

    From the Form 4B
    Who can complete this form?
A certified public accountant licensed in one of the U.S. jurisdictions who is properly licensed and registered
or authorized to practice in the jurisdiction of their principal place of business. If a CPA supervisor was not properly licensed or registered or
authorized to practice in the state where they practiced, the experience cannot be accepted.

If your firm does not have an office in MA, then I would search out another supervisor who is licensed in NYS to sign off on your 4B.
If there is not another supervisor available to sign off for you, then your current supervisor needs to register with NYS, and once they are properly licensed in NYS, then you work for another year and they should be able to sign off for you at that point.

You may be exception to the rule, but I HIGHLY doubt you will be that lucky.
