The Magical 150 in WA

I’m just about to finish my BA in Accounting (WA State) and did an informational interview with a CPA firm that got me thinking just maybe I could/should pursue the CPA credential. Being “old” as far as education goes (40…three days after my last class ends), I don’t want to go for a masters, and can barely focus on my last two bachelors courses from burnout.

When I’m finished I’ll have 48 credits at university, plus 81 from community college that transferred. I actually have 88, but apparently those didn’t fit with WSU’s requirement, so that transcript will only show 129 when I’m finished.

My idea, I think from this forum, was to take 6 or 7 100-200 level classes from my community college when I’m done with the BA. I’ve emailed the WA board to ask if I could do that and all they sent me is a link to pay $100 for a credit evaluation. Ummm, no. I responded again saying I just want to know if I can take community college courses AFTER my bachelor’s to get there.

The response was “Credit earned from two-year institutions is accepted when you receive credit for the courses at a regionally accredited U.S. university. These credits must appear on an official transcript.”

I interpret that as a no, I cannot take cc courses because they won’t show up on my WSU transcript since I’d be taking them after graduation. Anyone else read it differently?

I was in the same boat, I had many credits all over (art, history, criminal justice, etc) and the core I needed in Accounting once I committed to finishing my degree. I think they are saying you should be able to take any class from any 4 year accredited school. I took a Fraud detection class for the remaining 2 hours I needed to have the 150 total hours. As long as you are not repeating a class you already took (and my state didn't even care if it was an accounting class!?!??!) and have 150 verifiable hours you should be good. Also, to help my budget I took the class online through Franklin University. Check out online options for the one class you need.

I ended up calling and I'm glad I did. They worded it wrong, and confirmed that I can take community college classes as long as they are regionally accredited. They also cleared up a question I had about total credits, and I only need 4 classes instead of six. Two grand for four classes at cc vs. $9k at state Uni for six? Yes, please!

I'll check into Franklin as well, though, thanks! Online is my only option. Living in the boonies along with working typical office hours keeps me tied to the computer.
