Taking nyquil the night before the exam

Okay, so I have been sick all weekend and I take FAR tomorrow. I want to get a good nights sleep and the only way I think I can do that is by taking a sleep aid. I feel like someone has to have been in this situation before. Is it a good idea?

Everyday night before the test, I take nyquil (even though I wasnt sick) at 8 PM just because I get anxious at night. I sleep at 10 PM, and wake up at 9AM. I grab coffee on the way review my notes in the car, and jump in for the kill. This method has not failed me. *Knock on wood*

I used to take melatonin the night before every one of my exams, otherwise I wouldn't have slept!

I don't think it is a good idea. Drink an energy drink a few hours before the exam instead. I had an anxiety a night before the exam and took a melatonin to force myself to sleep well. Big mistake! My brain was still in sleeping mode during the exam and got a 70.

I don't think it's a good idea because I personally still feel sleepy, groggy and out of it the day after I take nyquil. Not too mention because of my anxiety I normally “overcome” the sleepiness of the nyquil for a few hours. But if affects everyone differently.

Depending on when your test is I would say take Nyquil at least 12 hours before your exam to be awake by 7am. So latest at 7pm and go to bed right away. I might try a sleepytime tea from Celestial Seasonings though because it's a little more natural to help you sleep 🙂

@kayfcpa16 It isn't until 12:30 pm. If it was early in the morning I wouldn't consider it since I would be running the risk of being sleepy at exam time. I just want to be well rested for it.

My recommendation is to avoid taking a full dose. I thankfully didn't have that happen while I was studying, but in February I got really sick right as we were prepping for our annual audit. I couldn't avoid to take time off work, but when I took NyQuil I was always so groggy and foggy the next day. So I decided to take half a dose and it worked wonders, allowing me to sleep but not too much medicine hangover the next morning. Like the others have said, if you do take some, take it no later than 7-7:30pm tonight and make sure you give yourself plenty of time in the morning.

    Good luck tomorrow!

garydegiovanni, being well rested is very important during the exam! I would take half the dose and go to bed an hour earlier than your normally would …

You have ample time to wake up & review any notes if needed … (I've taken a dose of nyquil before an exam and I still woke up for my alarm at 7am for my exam the following day, I always book my exam no earlier than 11:30)..

I don't know how your body reacts that's why I say do half.

I agree with what others are saying.

Another thing to be careful with though (at least with my body reacts) is to try to wake up naturally without the alarm. I know if my alarm wakes me up after the morning after I take Nyquil I am able to get up but then an hour later I am falling asleep again. That's why I recommend taking it about 12hours before you want to wake up and trying to fall asleep right away.

At least for me, Nyquil works fantastic so long as I have at least 12 hours before I have to be awake AND I'm actually sick. If I take Nyquil to use as a sleep aid without cold symptoms, it has the opposite affect. Have you ever taken Nyquil before, and how do you react to it normally? I agree with the others regarding brain fog – I can't take more than a half dose of it or I feel like a zombie the next day.

Update – I took a full dose and slept for 11 hours, and I feel fantastic! Hopefully that translates into a successful exam today.
