We’ve probably all had a coworker, friend, or relative say something stupid-insane-dumb-outrageous or mean to us regarding the CPA exam. I’ve had several but topping the cake this go around happened just this week. I had found out prior that I had failed FAR by 1 point and BEC by 2. (double ugh!) My boss had offered to let me go back down to part time for the next two months while I study and retake the exams. A coworker was asking snidely what I planned to do and “was I going to go back to part time?” I replied that I didn’t know and that I’m giving it the weekend to think about. His response was “I don’t know why you’d go back to part time, it’s not like it helped this last time”

What’s your moment where stabbing the person in the eye seemed like a reasonable response to their dumb question?

Over Thanksgiving holidays:

Me: “I'll have to say ‘no' to playing Ticket to Ride (a great board game!). I've got to sneak off to study somewhere for a few hours.”
Brother-in-law: “When is your test, again?”
Me: “In January.”
Brother-in-law: “Is there really any point in studying right now? Won't you just forget what you study between now and January? Shouldn't you just cram close to the test date?”
My wife: “It doesn't work that way. This is actually a hard exam.”
Me: “Thanks, babe.”

I have a friend who quit the exams after a few fails and guaranteed me if she couldn't pass neither could I. Too funny, anyone can pass who never walks away.

I looked for the original thread a while ago and came up short , so let's just run with this one.

My uncle:”what are you studying for?”
Me: “the CPA exam”
Uncle: ” oh, you mean to become a notary public?”

Yes, that's why I have been studying for a year and went to graduate school for.

@Go.for.broke I couldn't find a different one, and this is the one that the Facebook link above points to, so I think this is the “right” thread, just pretty bare-bones…

But to not be totally off-topic…
My best story was from I a holiday with a family dinner (Easter? Mother's Day?) the year I started my CPA exams. An uncle asked what I was using to study, and I told him I was using Wiley books etc. He told me there was no way I could pass the exams without going to live classes for them (I presume he meant like the ones Becker offered), and went on and on about how I couldn't pass them. Fast-forward to Thanksgiving of the same year, I had all 4 passed, with Wiley books/test bank, no lectures let alone live courses. Oops, not sure how that happened. 😛 (Note: we live in the middle of nowhere, so the closest live courses were probably 1.5 – 2 hours away, it's not like he was suggesting I just run down the street for a couple hours on the weekend…)

My aunt asked why I suffered so much trying to get the exams passed. I said because I want to be a licensed professional.
My 19 year old cousin asked: “a license?”
Then my aunt added: “yeah a license, you know like when you go to the hair salon and those ladies have their haircut license hanging by the mirror, like that.”

I almost died, but then again, she's the kind of person who thinks that anything that requires studying or anything that will prevent you from watching your nightly sop operas is not worth pursuing.

My favorite- “Oh yea. I took (insert random test here) and it was sooooo hard. But I passed, so you will get it.”

Random Exams: LPN, Architecture, Buiding Inspector, Enrolled Agent, Real Estate, City Water Tester, ASE Certification, Contractor, X-Ray Technician, GMAT, GRE, Praxis, Insurance Agent, Cosmetologist, Nail Technician

For reals- every single exam I listed; there was a real person who looked me dead in the face and said those exact words. I live in a small town where everyone knows everything. :/ I don’t want to be known for throat-punching random people, so I run a lot and try to avoid all CPA convos.
