Studying/Taking Exams During Allergy Season

This time of year is the worst for me with allergies. I have my BEC retake this Friday and I feel like I got hit in the head with a brick. Trying my best to stay focused and review for the exam but every day is a struggle.

Just wanted to see if anyone can relate to my misery and what they are doing to get through it. Allergy medications tend to make me sleepy so I try to only take them before bed.

I use the 12 hour Sudefed. I get my dr to write a prescription for the OTC meds so I can buy them. i take 1 in the morning and 1 at night. a lot of people have trouble sleeping with Sudefed, I do not. Because Sudefed can have interactions with other medications, you should check with your dr before taking. I also take Advil and Tylenol for the sinus headache pain when it's really bad.

    I can sympathize.

    Good luck

Try Flonase or Nasacort – only a very small percentage feel any side effects at all

Find some meds that help you get through the allergies season and reduce symptoms. Visit an ENT. On my last exam I had to be put on steroids so i didn't get headaches so I can study. Its very difficult studying when you dont feel good I can attest to that. Push through with the help of meds or steam inhalation.

I think this year will be extra bad in Cali due to rains. I just got over a whopper of a “summer cold” which was really aggravated allergies.

The old standby Chlorepheniramine maleate is still the best (brand name ARM). The new wave of allergy meds (a la Claritin) almost do nothing for me. It doesn't make me terribly drowsy.

A trick for meds that make people drowsy – cut in half. Half pill, half as drowsy, often with sufficient effects.

I usually take an allergy pill when it's really bad. Unfortunately I forgot to take one last night before bed and woke up sneezing all over the place. It would've been fine but I had my audit test today.

FYI, if you need it for test day. At the prometric center I asked if I could bring in some tissues because I have horrible allergies. They said I was allowed two tissues at a time (provided by them). If I needed more then I could come back out, throw my used ones away and get two more. I didn't need to be on a scheduled break to do so.
