First off, I know how to stay healthy normally. I used to eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, and my hobby was triathlons. I was once 27 and had a metabolism. At the age of 37 with a 40+ job, a wonderful wife and two awesome little boys, I am trying to tackle the CPA exam.

When I first started studying (FAR), I thought, “Oh, I’ll take the tablet to the gym and read and listen to a lecture.” Quickly I realized that the CPA exam is a very jealous lover. She does not take kindly to your half-hearted attention. Since mid-December I have studied every night, at my desk, taking furious notes, fully mentally engaged. I mostly study at night after my family goes to bed.

I’m holding my life together except for my health…I’ve gained 30 lbs in one year…guh. My bikes and running shoes and gym membership are all going unused.

Are any of you in this boat? Are you doing the “I’ll just focus on fitness once these letters are behind my name” or have you found a way to incorporate fitness and still pass exams/stay married/employed?

@.Sunshine – how much…time? energy? mental fortitude? wing-speed of an unladen swallow? If for time, mine was about a week after transcripts received. I can't speak for any other units of measurement.

Push ups, tricep dips, squats, lunges, planks, aaaaaand everyone's personal favorite – burpees between problem sets! This can also help during problem sets if you find yourself getting sleepy or not focusing. Much better than going to the kitchen for a study snack or logging onto Another71 to distract yourself for 15 minutes…

But really the whole “skinny bodies are made in the kitchen” is SO true. I am 120 pounds at 5'6 with this method. I used to be about 40 pounds heavier, but one day about four years old the whole “portion control” thing just clicked with me and I stopped overeating. I didn't cut any food out, which I think also helps with long term success. However, I kind of had the whole “skinny fat” thing going on at first because half my calories may or may not have come from potato chips and I wasn't really exercising. 45 – 50 hours a week in public accounting, trying to pass these exams, and maintaining romantic and other interpersonal relationships does not equal a lot of time for exercise, but now I make sure to eat more nutrient dense foods before a bag of chips.

Implementing body-weight exercises has helped a lot as well. A set of 15 tricep dips, 10 push-ups and a minute of planks should take about three minutes, but the results really do add up and give you a bit of an energy boost. Also burpees. You never regret burpees, unless you are currently doing a burpee!

My secret is working 12 hour days before studying, eating fast food for every meal, chain-smoking, and sleeping 4 hours a night. It works wonders!

lol at some of the funny responses. Great advice from people too.

You already have a bike… go out for a 30 minute ride as soon as you get home from work! Eating healthy during the day will help you keep up your energy to ride and study 😉

I just mowed the lawn. Again.
I gave up all meat years ago and what a difference that has made. No hormones, no antibiotics. I eat 5 small meals a day, more like large snacks and drink water throughout the day. Low dairy, low sugar. Nuts, fruit, veg, sandwich, pasta, some soy substitutes, etc. Just enough maintenance caffeine in morning. I walk everyday at lunch even if just for 15 minutes. Stretch, stretch, stretch. Sleep 8 hours a night.
    So, good night!
